Surely it can’t seriously have been over two months since our last foray into the fine Friday freebie tradition? Where DOES the time go, pop kids!?
Well we’re afraid we’ll have to make up for that with our latest edition of one of your favourite regulars on the site – Free Track Friday. Hopefully your fingers are well limbered for all the download clicky goodness below. Download fingers at the ready…
• OLYMPIC AYRES : Magic
We’ve been meaning to feature this rather special piece of home-grown pop for a couple of weeks now, so now (perhaps a little belatedly) it gets its time in the sunshine. Sydney duo Olympic Ayres recently released this single and its accompanying remixes to digital retail across the globe, paving the way for the upcoming release of their ‘Episode III’ EP, due on the first of August. ‘Magic’ is exactly what is says on the box. Brilliant, polished, international, blissful, summery, homegrown pop that deserves to be heard. We may be late to the Olympic Ayres party, but consider us RSVPed from here on in. Like the boys on Facebook HERE to get the track for nothing.
• RAVE RADIO : #Dammit
Gold Coast duo Rave Radio (aka James Todman & Brett Allen) have been slowly but surely making a name for themselves on the local dance scene, lending their remix talents to a host of fine dance/pop releases. To say ‘thankyou’ to their fans for their support at the recent InTheMix dance awards, they’re giving away their latest single free! The banging piece of (mainly) instrumental deliciousness will ignite your night. It’s free HERE.
• MAROON 5 : Love Somebody (Viceroy Remix)
‘Love Somebody’ – the latest single from US pop outfit Maroon 5 – has been given the remix treatment by one of our favourites, San Francisco-based producer Viceroy. And it’s a glittering, up-tempo, hands-in-the-air remix that pop lovers are really going to dig. Recently named as one of the top 25 producers under the age of 25, the stars are colliding for Viceroy as we speak. He’s offering this mix up free to you, so head HERE to nab it now.
• PIGEON : Daft Punk Medley
Last week we brought you the latest news on Brisbane five piece Pigeon, their latest single ‘Curtain Calls’ (check it HERE) and a national tour that will see them fluttering predominantly up and down the East Coast throughout August and September. The gents have also been in the studio of late, laying down a scorching medley of Daft Punk hits that (you guessed it) they’re giving away free. So for nine full minutes of Daft Punk/Pigeon mash-up magic, best you head HERE.
• ROCKET & THE GHOST : Goodbye
Super-cool stuff ripped straight from the streets of Brooklyn, New York. The three piece tells us that their influences “span from Johnny Cash and Led Belly to Jack White and The Cold War Kids”, but what we hear here is an interesting, highly listenable pop/rock track with a great hook and international appeal. Any wonder why, then, that they released it globally earlier this week. Of course, you can take the sneaky way out and get the track HERE for nothing. Pretty impressive.
• A GIRL CALLED RUTH : Lullaby (Joash Remix)
23 year old London songstress A Girl Called Ruth might not have cracked the big time just yet, but she’s certainly not lacking in determination, having worked solidly at her career for the past decade. Her latest track is entitled ‘Lullaby’ and it’s been remixed by a London-based “future jazz” producer named Joash. The remix combines AGCR’s almost Ellie Goulding-esque vocals with fresh production with impressive results. ‘Like’ her on Facebook and get the download free HERE.
• YOLANDA BE COOL : Sweat Naked (The Japanese Popstars Remix)
Aussie production dynamos Yolanda Be Cool (yes, they of ‘We No Speak Americano’ fame) are back with a brand new single called ‘Sweat Naked’. The track was released to iTunes earlier this week, but there are remixes to follow from the likes of Etienne De Crecy, Harris Robotis, Sub Antix – and of course, The Japanese Popstars, a free download of which is available now. You can get your hands on the remix for nix HERE ahead of the release of the ‘Sweat Naked’ remix EP on Tuesday August 13.
• LITTLE MAY : Boardwalks
Well if this isn’t a gorgeous, summery little slice of folk pop from Sydney-based three piece Little May… Hannah Field, Liz Drummond and Annie Hamilton form the band, each of them is entirely self-taught and ‘Boardwalks’ is their introduction to the world. And what a gorgeous introduction it is. We’re informed that their debut EP is set for release later this year. In the meantime, soothe your troubled mind with this sublime, delicate little nugget, free HERE.
• HANA KIM : Mexico
How we’re loving the smooth grooves of this new single from Los Angeles based songstress Hana Kim. The soulful pop track ‘Mexico’ is the lead single from Hana’s forthcoming album ‘Exodo’, which is currently due for release globally in September. She’s got a rich-as-caramel voice that gels spectacularly with the old-school production of the tune. Very sexy stuff. And if ‘Mexico’ is anything to go by, September can’t come soon enough. Get it free HERE.
• PLUMP DJS : Son Of A Gun
London based DJ duo Plump DJs (aka Lee Rous & Andy Gardner) are no stranger to having their remixes used by some of the biggest names in the business. The likes of Moby, Mark Ronson and even Deadmau5 have all used their services in recent years as word of their talent quickly spreads. The boys have recently released a new single called ‘Super Imploder’ via Beatport and are about to embark on a tour around the UK and US, but they’ve also dropped this punchy dance number called ‘Son Of A Gun’, complete with phrenetic beats and bleeps and the occasional vocal. It’s poppers o’clock – and it’s FREE.
• KRIS ANGELIS FTG. ZANE CARNEY : Nothing You Can Say
Another little gem straight from the West Coast of the USA, Kris Angelis will deliver her debut album ‘The Left Atrium’ later this month to a global audience. Described as “eclectic country folk”, her fabulous publicists have tipped us off about this gorgeous little torch song called ‘Nothing You Can Say’, which she’s offering up as a free download. It’s tender, delicate and oh so sweet and features the equally gorgeous vocal of Zane Carney. ‘The Left Atrium’ drops globally on July 29. The track is available HERE.
• LA MER : Anchor Baby
We introduce you to some gorgeous voices as part of our Free Track Friday segments on the site – and here’s another one; California-based songstress La Mer. ‘Anchor Baby’ is the lead single and title track from the singer’s album (which is available through the Aussie iTunes store). Her publicists promise “beautifully written instrumentation, mesmerizing vocals and standout lyrics” and they’re not far wrong. La Mer’s vocals are soft, dusty and emotive and the instrumentation is organic and always interesting. Check it out HERE and get your free download if the mood takes.
So there you have it… long overdue, yes, but bursting at the seams with a swag of varied, special free download goodness. We’ll try not to leave it so long between drinks next time.
Have yourself a brilliant weekend. Sending love.
