We were more than a little smitten by contestant Emma Birdsall and her timeless, old soul vocal on last year’s season of ‘The Voice’.
We were also taken with her track ‘Never In A Million Years’, offered up as a free download earlier this year, which effortlessly traversed boundaries of pop and jazz.
Now comes the singer’s debut single proper with Island Records Australia.
‘Lovers & Friends’ landed at Australian digital retail on Friday last week and has been serviced to media this week.
The radio friendly pop number that perfectly showcases Emma’s smoky vocal was co-written in Los Angeles with Mike Daly and Chris DeStefano, who have worked with Lana Del Rey and Kelly Clarkson respectively.
“I wrote ‘Lovers & Friends’ about a boy I had just met,” Emma explains. “I just literally sat down and started telling the story and Mike and Chris were saying ‘write that down, write that down’ so it was a natural outpouring and a real story.”
And if this single is anything to go by, the Emma Birdsall story has only just begun… and we can’t wait for the debut album to follow.
