There’s certainly a whiff of familiarity to Guy Sebastian’s new single ‘Like A Drum’, which held in this weekend’s ARIA top ten, despite dropping six places from its No.4 debut.
It’s similar in feel to Avicii’s recent No.1 hit ‘Wake Me Up’, blending mainstream dance with a slightly organic feel courtesy of the odd guitar or two and, as the song title suggests, a drum or two.
We can’t quite put our finger on what it is about this song that feels a little disingenuous for our liking and we kinda get the feeling it’s not going to be around the charts for anywhere near as long as ‘Battle Scars’, which was simply breathtaking.
Guy’s voice is the star here.

“we kinda get the feeling it’s not going to be around the charts for anywhere near as long as ‘Battle Scars'”.
Well considering Battle Scars sold well over 8x platinum in Australia, and is the second highest selling Australian artist single of all time on the Australian charts, second only to the mega mega mega hit Sombody That I Used to Know, I would think the truth of your statement is pretty darned obvious.
Anyway I love the song, and it seems the Australian public is warming to it too. I think it may be in the chart a little longer than you think. Not as long as Battle Scars of course, but long enough for it to be counted as another hit amoungst his many hits.

I quite like the track and, as you indicate, the vocal is outstanding as usual. I was surprised that he jumped on this style though, which has been around so long, especially since hearing him say on radio that he hoped to make some mileage with it overseas on the back of the brilliant ‘Battle Scars’ success. I wish him luck with it. Amazing live performer.

Guy’s always done his own thing, even when it was a million miles away from what was popular at the time (e.g. his swing period). With “Like A Drum”, though, it’s clear that he’s going for an Avicii vibe (regardless of whether he previewed a country/dance song in June or not…!). Guy’s not silly – it was a conscious decision on his part.

Get real, Guy did not rip off anyone, Guy previewed a new song ‘Alive’ at his June concert which had a similar country/dance vibe so he was already experimenting with this sound..check out his song on youtube

It’s embarrassing how much of a rip-off of “Wake Me Up” this is.
