We’re really in the home stretch now with our Countdown To Eurovision series for 2014. The competition kicks off in Denmark next Tuesday evening their time, with 16 countries competing in the first of the semi finals for the ten places on offer in the big Grand Final four nights later. Of course, those ten countries will be battling the ten who make it through from the second of the semi finals, along with the perennial “big five” nations of the UK, France, Germany, Italy and Spain, along with the host nation Denmark. And it’s the host nation’s entry we take a look at in the latest in our Countdown To Eurovision series.
BASIM : Cliché Love Song
Of course, the pressure’s pretty much off the Danes for most of this year’s song contest, given that (as host nation) they don’t have to go through the rigmarole of the semi finals. It’s not often that countries go back to back at Eurovision (Ireland was the last with three successive wins in 1992, 1993 and 1994, Israel did it in 1978/1979, Spain and Luxembourg before that), so the odds of the Danes scoring another title in Copenhagen aren’t on their side. But they’ll give the competition a red hot crack with Basim’s single ‘Cliché Love Song’. A former ‘X Factor’ alumni in his homeland, it’s clear he’s got a great vocal and oodles of charisma. Perhaps we could liken him to a Danish version of Olly Murs. Cute track – and one of the stronger in this year’s field. But it might not be enough to see off the competition this time around.
