Today marks a month precisely ’til the Grand Final of the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest gets underway in Copenhagen, with 20 countries from each of the two semi finals joining Spain, the UK, France, Italy and Germany as the top five and Denmark as the host country to battle it out for the ultimate in European bragging rights. Here at auspOp, we’re continuing our look at each of the entries for this year’s competition as the countdown to Eurovision continues.
CAN-LINN FTG. KASEY SMITH : Heartbeat
Hang about. You’re telling us that Jedward is NOT actually competition for Ireland again this year? They’re nowhere to be seen, but a group called Can-Linn is, with vocalist Kasey Smith out front. Kasey is known in the darkest recesses of pop history as a member of failed Irish girl group Wonderland, who had a top 30 hit in Ireland with ‘Not A Love Song’ back in 2011. She attempted to reboot her career in 2013 by auditioning for Eurovision, but failed at the final hurdle. So could 2014 be her year? ‘Heartbeat’ is a pretty straightforward pop track, albeit infused with traditional Irish fiddles, and while it’s definitely listenable, it’s not particularly fun and it’s far from outstanding. Will Ireland make it through from the second semi final? Probably, yes. But they’ll not fare as well on the 10th.
