It’s just over a week ’til the Eurovision Song Contest gets underway in Copenhagen and as always, us Aussies are excited about what’s to come as part of this year’s competition. Ten countries will move through from each of the semi finals (on May 06 and May 08) to take part in the Grand Final, where they’ll compete against host nation Denmark, along with the “big five” of Germany, Spain, France, the United Kingdom and Italy.
And it’s the latter’s entry that we’re taking a quick look at this morning.
EMMA MARRONE : La Mia Città
She might still be only 29 year of age, but Emma Marrone is somewhat of a veteran in the Italian music industry. She got her start as a contestant on a reality TV show, subsequently forming a pop trio. Chart success followed, then a split, then another band, then another TV talent show, followed by a successful solo career and a win at the San Remo Music Festival. This year, however, Emma’s star is set to shine beyond the borders of Italy with ‘La Mia Città’, (‘My City’), her official entry in Eurovision 2014. ‘La Mia Città’ is a pretty ballsy up-tempo pop/rock number that suits Emma’s husky vocals right down to a tee. It’s punchy, stylish and although a little reminiscent of The Cardigans’ ‘My Favourite Game’ in parts, is bang on trend (visual styling’s also pretty slick). What’ll hold the track back, sadly, is its limited appeal given it’s sung entirely in Italian. Props to them, however, for being proud enough of their gorgeous native tongue to give English the flick.
