One tiny little song with a tiny five letter title has single-handedly resurrected Pharrell Williams’ recording career. ‘Happy’ was (and continues to be) a global chart monster, selling millions across the globe, including more than a million in the UK, more than four million Stateside and notching up six times platinum sales here in Australia (over 420,000 copies and climbing).
But there IS a problem. ‘Happy’ was so big that anything that was to follow in its wake was never going to match its success. Its bridesmaid is ‘Marilyn Monroe’.
On its own terms, the single is very likeable, with a good groove, polished beats and an aesthetically pleasing video clip (below) that features a bevy of beauties, along with a cameo appearance by none other than Ms Kelly Osbourne. Those qualities alone may keep Pharrell’s booming fanbase… ‘happy’.
