Yes, we’ve done it again; timed everything to perfection, with the last in our Countdown To Eurovision series co-inciding with the kick-off of the 2014 competition tonight in Denmark. Copenhagen’s B&W Hallerne will come alive with the songs of the first of the semi finals, after which ten countries will move through to the Grand Final on Saturday night. On Thursday, it’s another series of entries battling for a further ten positions. Then on Saturday night, those 20 countries will battle against the UK, France, Germany, Italy and Spain, along with the host nation Denmark for Eurovision glory.
Here in Australia, SBS kicks off their coverage with the first of the semi finals on Friday night (8:30pm). The second semi final (at which our own Jessica Mauboy will perform her single ‘Sea Of Flags’) screens on Saturday night (8:30pm) and the Grand Final hits our screens on Sunday night from 7:30pm.
ARAM MP3 : Not Alone
As we’ve done in previous years, we’ve left the favourite to lift the trophy ’til last. Though the odds have narrowed markedly in the past couple of weeks, Armenia’s entry (Aram MP3’s single ‘Not Alone’) has continued to beat out the competition in its favouritism. And it’s this very song that will kick off all Eurovision proceedings this year; opening the first of the semi finals tonight (European time). Aram is a comedian, a TV presenter (including ‘Idol’ and ‘X Factor’ in Armenia) and now a singer and he’s well placed to send next year’s competition to its capital Yerevan.
It’s entirely likeable. Almost like a tale of two songs, ‘Not Alone’ spends its first half as a tender piano ballad which implores the listener to always fight for love, but builds into a beefy, thumping pop track with more impassioned vocals and dramatic strings. Will it walk away with ultimate Eurovision glory? We’ll know in just five days’ time!
