Can you believe it? We’re almost at the end of our annual ‘Countdown To Eurovision’ series, with only three more countries to take a look at after today. Naturally, we’ve timed things right down to the wire with the series, with the last of our stories timed to go live on Tuesday morning, mere hours before the competition kicks off in the Danish capital Copenhagen.
Of course, that’s just the first of the semi finals – and there’s another where that came from, with 20 countries in total moving through from the semi finals to the Grand Final on May 10 where they’ll take on the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and host nation Denmark.
But who’s got what it takes to walk away with ultimate Eurovision glory?
FIRELIGHT : Coming Home
We’re off to Malta in the fourth last in our Countdown To Eurovision series. The country is set to compete in the second of the semi finals on Thursday, where they’ll open proceedings with their entry Firelight and their single ‘Coming Home’. Now given Firelight is a Maltese folk pop band, we’re not expecting miracles here and there’s no doubt that their first place won’t do them any favours when it comes to the public vote (given there’ll be another 14 entries following them in their semi).
But ‘Coming Home’ is a rather gorgeous, stomping folk/pop track, with a poignant message aimed squarely at the survivors of war. It’s got a hopeful air about it and the band’s vocal layering is most definitely a highlight. We reckon Malta will have no worries in making it through to the Grand Final, but the odds there are currently against them.
