It’s Friday, which means we’re literally days away from the kick off of the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest. We’re off to Copenhagen, Denmark for this year’s edition, after Emmelie de Forest’s win with ‘Only Teardrops’ last year and once again the competition is expected to be super-tight. The semi finals take place next Tuesday and Thursday (May 06 and 08), from which ten countries each will progress through to the Grand Final on Saturday May 10, where they’ll compete against the host nation, along with the big five of Italy, Spain, France, Germany and the United Kingdom. Here at auspOp – as we’ve done for the past six years – we’ve been taking an in-depth look at each of this year’s entries.
VALENTINA MONETTA : Maybe (Forse)
If Valentina looks a little familiar to you, it’s probably because she is. She’s competed at the past two Eurovision competitions (with ‘The Social Network Song’ and ‘Crisalide (Vola)’ respectively), failing to get beyond the semi final stage on both occasions. So she’s no doubt hoping that it’ll be a case of third time lucky as the Sammarinese cheer her on during the first of the semi finals on Tuesday. So what’s ‘Maybe’ like?
It’s not bad. It feels like it’s got a whole ‘The Winner Takes It All’ vibe going on, which makes it likeable. Valentina’s studio-based performance in the official video, however, not so much. But it’s entirely possible that the tiny land-locked nation could make it past the semi final phase, which would mark its best-ever result at Eurovision.
