Ariana Grande is having an amazing year.
She’s successfully gone from Nickelodeon starlet to video vixen, without even having to take her clothes off!
‘My Everything’ is her second album (her first, ‘Yours Truly’, went top ten last year) and is a feature-heavy effort that utilizes Ariana’s premier vocals yet feels a bit confused at times.
You’ve no doubt heard singles ‘Problem’ and ‘Break Free’ by now, so let’s crack on with the others.
The Max Martin-produced ‘One Last Time’ is another surefire hit-in-waiting with its throbbing chorus and we’ve had ‘Break Your Heart Right Back’ on repeat for the best part of a week due to its brilliant use of a Diana Ross ‘I’m Coming Out’ sample (which makes sense once you hear the lyrics). We also like the soulful early 1990s R&B vibe of ‘Be My Baby’.
One song we didn’t appreciate for a few listens, but is now one of our favourites, is ‘Love Me Harder’. We’re suckers for emotional electro dance pop, and this wouldn’t sound out of place on a Robyn album. We even like The Weeknd on it.
There are a few mis-steps though. For instance, ‘Hands On Me’ fails to impress. It has a bit of a ‘Problem’ vibe before diverting into a try-hard effort to turn Ariana into the new Mariah (a comparison she has received a lot since the album came out).
We also didn’t care much for the title tack, preferring the Christina Perri-esque ‘Just A Little Bit Of Your Heart’ in the ballad stakes.
All in all, there are quite a few avenues for Ms. Grande to consider when picking a signature sound when it comes to future albums. We quite like the idea of her becoming an American Robyn/Agnes (as seen on ‘Break Free’).
Sure, ‘Problem’ worked once, but we’re not sure it will continue to work for Ariana in the long term.
