Soul legend Aretha Franklin’s cover of ‘Rolling In The Deep’ has been causing plenty of discussion on the web over the last couple of days.
And whether the discussion’s been positive or negative, it’s all discussion and therefore the perfect springboard off which to launch Aretha’s forthcoming album ‘Aretha Sings The Great Diva Classics’.
Masterminded by Clive Davis, the new album brings together an even ten recordings of big diva anthems of a variety of vintages. Yes, there’s Adele’s ‘Rolling In The Deep’ and Alicia Keys’ ‘No One’ on there, but trips back to yesteryear (‘Midnight Train To Georgia’, ‘At Last’) are represented, with a selection from the decades in between. There’s also a mash-up of Gloria Gaynor’s ‘I Will Survive’ with Destiny’s Child’s ‘Survivor’.
Mix in a roll-call of big name producers (including Andre 3000, Babyface, Eric Kupper and Harvey Mason Jr just to name a few, and you have what, on paper at least, makes for a very compelling listen.
‘Aretha Franklin Sings The Great Diva Classics’ lands at Australian retail on Friday October 24.
