Cheryl Cole/Tweedy/Fernandez-Versini is great at many things. She’s a great ‘X Factor’ judge, dancer and singer of singles.
However, she has yet to produce a good album and ‘Only Human’ is now her fourth mediocre long player in a row. (Come get us Soldiers!)
We almost got our hopes up for a good album when we heard ‘Crazy Stupid Love’. It was completely unexpected in a Girls Aloud kind of way. It was a proper grower, with trumpets and handclaps that grew on you with every listen.
Second single ‘I Don’t Care’ was more instant and even broke the mould by being Cheryl’s first major single release that wasn’t a love song. Revolutionary.
The rest of ‘Only Human’, however… well let’s start with the good.
‘Waiting For Lightning’ has obvious third single potential, with its Sia-esque production and dramatic pop chorus.
‘It’s About Time’ is a fun euro trash disco pop number with a piano backing that is too reminiscent of earlier release ‘Call My Name’. Certainly not a bad thing in our books.
Elsewhere, ‘All In One Night’ is also pretty decent. It’s an R&B mid tempo that wouldn’t have sounded out of place on Ariana Grande’s album.
The title track, ‘Stars’, and bonus track ‘Firecracker’ also make the grade.
Now the bad… pretty much everything else. Ok so maybe that’s harsh but Cheryl was one fifth of Girls Aloud. Forgive us for raised expectations.
Notable lowlights amongst the not-so-good are the pretentious ‘Live Life Now’ and ‘Goodbye Means Hello’, which sounds like an average Atomic Kitten album track.
The deluxe edition further pushes this delicate friendship by hitting 18 tracks, and there are only so many light-R&B down/mid-tempo Cheryl songs that one can handle. If she had done a 12 track album with a couple more dance tracks we would’ve been happy… Well maybe not happy, but satisfied.
Quite frankly her party songs tend to be the ones picked as singles, so we’re not sure why she insists on the subpar mid-tempo songs.
We’ve seen Cheryl embrace multiple name and image transformations but now its time for her to embrace her easy affinity with dance music.
We can handle one or two slower songs, but only if they’re more ‘All In One Night’ than ‘Goodbye Means Hello’!
