The Veronicas have finally returned to the airwaves and the charts, and what a return they’ve made!
‘You Ruin Me’ topped the Australian charts and new single ‘If You Love Someone’ is getting more airplay every week.
Their self-titled new album has been in the works for some five years, so it’s remarkable how cohesive it is, with songs from throughout the years flowing seamlessly.
The electronic influences that dominated their 2007 sophomore release ‘Hook Me Up’ return in a limited capacity.
‘Did You Miss Me? (I’m A Veronica)’ is a brutally honest electronic extravaganza whilst ‘Mad Love’ and ‘Line Of Fire’ flirt with electro elements in their verses. We need to give a special shoutout to the ‘blow me away’ section in the latter; that’s a Veronicas trademark we had forgotten that we’ve missed. Kylie may have trademarked a particular sense of pop euphoria but The Veronicas has transformed the dramatic end of a chorus into an art.
Elsewhere it’s a straight pop/rock love fest. Songs like ‘Born Bob Dylan’ and ‘Teenage Millionaire’ are textbook Veronicas. We especially like ‘Cruel’ (co-written by Leah Haywood) and would love if that was a single.
From a lyrical standpoint, our favourite moment on here is ‘Cold’. The song combines angry stream of consciousness raps with a classic Veronicas chorus. We’re not sure if it would work as a single, but it’s sure to be a fan favourite.
‘You Ruin Me’ is one of the best ballads of the year, and is the least generic song Sydney production duo DNA has produced in a while.
To end proceedings, the girls keep it simple and acoustic on ‘Let Me Out’ and ‘You And Me’. The latter in particular is quite sweet, focusing on harmonies and lyrics that are obviously incredibly personal.
If there were one word we would use to describe the album, it would be ‘vengeance’. The album is a middle finger to their former record company and to anyone who wrote them off. The Veronicas are still an incredible force to be reckoned with, improved from years of honing their craft in their period of captivity.
Welcome back girls, let’s hope we won’t be apart this long again.
