March 17, 2014. That was the date that we first clapped ears on the track that’s bagged the No.1 position in our countdown of the best singles of 2014.
While she’d been only too willing to hand over a succession of pop nuggets to some of the biggest names in the pop game, there was little doubt in anyone’s mind on hearing ‘Chandelier’ why Sia decided to keep it as her very own.
“it’s utterly brilliant,” we said of the track back in March. “Not only does it feature street-wise urban-style beats, but it’s highlighted by Sia’s soaring vocals in a chorus that’s so spectacular, it’ll easily guarantee the track a place in our top ten singles of 2014. If anyone feels Sia hasn’t shone in her own right before, here’s the song that’s going to cement her as one of the globe’s biggest stars.” And didn’t it?
She was constantly in demand for TV appearances of the track, rarely turning to face the camera for her performances and often employing the services of 11 year old Maddie Ziegler.
But it was the song itself that shone brightest. An ode to a battle with the booze, what floored us most was Sia’s extraordinary vocal performance. It was incredibly raw, pushed to the very limits of its capabilities and on first listen, it gave us a sensation of our hearts opening for the very first time. It was truly glorious.
Songs like ‘Chandelier’ don’t come around particularly often. And combined with the fact that it came from one of our country’s finest, it was a no-brainer for us to keep it as our top pick.
Our countdown’s wrapped with our No.1 pop single of 2014;
Sia’s extraordinary ‘Chandelier’.
