The pop world was rocked in September by the sudden death of Simone Battle. But no-one was rocked more than her bandmates from girl group G.R.L., which had already conquered charts across the globe with their debut single ‘Ugly Heart’ and were on the precipice of breaking the US.
What’s followed has been a simple statement on their socials and a period of elongated silence as the girls, their label, management, peers, friends, family and fans all came to terms with Simone’s death.
From there, their musical journey has been an incredibly delicate balancing act. How long before releasing new music? What type of song to come back with? Do they continue as a four piece or recruit another fifth member? And how do they publicly pay tribute to their late sister?
We think G.R.L. and their team and done amazingly well with ‘Lighthouse’ in capturing and paying tribute to Simone’s spirit. The clip’s stripped back and understated; the girls still clearly reeling from their loss as they take their first tentative steps back into the pop limelight as a four piece.
