They’re the Melbourne-born sisters taking the music world by storm. Though Miriam (Mim) and Olivia (Liv) Nervo started out writing glorious pop songs together (hi Rachel Stevens!), it was a collaboration with David Guetta that set them on a slightly different musical path and into the dance music stratosphere.
NERVO was born.
With the new NERVO single ‘It Feels’ out now and an album bursting with guest star appearances due for release later this year, we sent off a few pressing questions to the jet-setting ladies and here are their all important answers.
Q. You originally set out doing more pop stuff. What lured you into the big bad world of EDM?
A. Originally our goal was to just make music. We wrote a few poppy records, got a publishing deal and were thrown into the world of writing for pop stars. We always had a love for dance music but at the time that wasn’t our focus. We found ourselves working Monday – Friday for pop stars and then going out to clubs and hanging with our DJ buddies on the weekends. Eventually the two worlds came together and we decided to focus on our own project which was NERVO :)
Q. And what’s the best thing about being in the business?
A. The best thing is that we do what we love for a living. The cliche is real ; do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life.
Q. You’re both rather amazing vocalists in your own right (yes, we know it wasn’t all Rachel Stevens on ‘Negotiate With Love’)… why haven’t we seen your vocals popping up more on your tunes?
A. Funny you should mention that because our new album has a lot more tracks with our own vocals. That being said, we love to work with other artists. The textures that other vocalists add to our tracks / songs make the process so much more creative and fun.
Q. What means more to you in your career? Sales? Chart positions? Or crowds at your gigs?
A. Definitely crowds at our gigs and the music that we make. There’s no better feeling than seeing your tune connect with people – both in a live environment and also online. It’s a total buzz!
Q. What’s the best gig you’ve ever played?
A. It’s impossible to pick our favourite gig because there have been so many amazing moments. Playing main stage Tomorrowland last summer was a definite highlight as we had the sunset time slot so, we saw the day turn to night, the crowd were super psyched, they came together from all over the world as one and they responded really well to our new music. It was definitely a highlight of our careers!
Q. Of all the tracks you’ve ever written, which are you most proud of?
A. ‘When Love Takes Over’, because it showed us that we should never give up. It opened doors for us and also taught us that a song may not work for one person but, it may work for another. The song was originally written for Kelly Rowland and when her record label passed on it David Guetta picked it up. From there, it went on to win a grammy and spurred on the beginning of our journey as NERVO.
Q. And is there one track from throughout history (anyone’s) that you wish you had written?
A. Imagine but John Lennon. Such a gorgeous meaning.
Q. Where do you see the dance music sound headed next?
A.It will evolve and blend with other music and hopefully one day we can all be on the same bill. It won’t just be a festival only with DJs. Maybe in the next year or two there will be more DJs playing at iHeart or the radio station xmas shows. That would be great to see!
Q. Who’s the highest on your list of people that you’re yet to work with?
A. There are so many, but the first ones that come to mind are Imogen Heap and Dolly Parton. They’re both such fierce ladies with so much talent!
Q. Right… so ‘Collateral’, this debut album of yours. Tell us everything we need to know about it. Who’s on it, guest vocalists, who you’ve worked with on it, when it’s out, whether it contains music you’ve already released and whether it will offer up one or two surprises!
A. It has mostly new tracks but includes a few old ones. We’re releasing a new track almost every month until we drop the album. We worked with so many friends, some being Kylie Minogue and Jake Shears, Kreyshawn, DEV, Nicky Romero, Steve Aoki.
Q. And any more live shows coming up in support of the album?
A. We are constantly on tour and constantly testing our records. We’re about to head to Ibiza for the summer again which is always a highlight of our year :)
NERVO’s album ‘Collateral’ is due later this year.
