According to Say Lou Lou’s Wikipedia page, the Kilbey-Jansson twins music is defined as “dream pop”; a description that is true in two respects.
Not only do the songs on ‘Lucid Dreaming’ have a dreamy atmosphere, their melodies are so rich and hook-laden that one might call them a dream come true for pop lovers (sorry, we couldn’t help ourselves).
The girls intrigue us from the moment the album begins with ‘Everything We Touch’, which is simply brilliant. It’s pulsing electro pop that grips you from the first listen.
Awesomely, the standard never deviates far from this pop high, with subsequent tracks experimenting with both rockier and ethereal influences.
Recent singles ‘Games For Girls’ and ‘Nothing But A Heartbeat’ both stand out in their own ways; the former is a straight up dance record, whilst the latter has the more emotive trademarks of a Robyn single, which is hardly a bad thing, is it?
Similarly, ‘Hard For A Man’ would’ve been a(nother) fan favourite had Taylor Swift recorded it for ‘1989’. It’s a bit 1980s, but has a knowing modern hook that delivers a lyrical punch to the XY chromosome listener.
The Aussie/Swede pair certainly love a good hook, and there are plenty on here for pop lovers. For instance, the chorus to ‘Julian’ has three captivating hooks thrown into one ultra-pop chorus.
‘Peppermint’ is also particularly enticing… It has seductive vocals that are almost Lana Del Ray-esque and the ‘don’t say it’s over’ refrain lingers beautifully on our musical palette.
We also have a lot of love for ‘Wilder Than The Wind’ and its delicate ethereal chorus.
For something a little bit less ‘dreamy’, go no further than ‘Beloved’ with its Kelly Clarkson-influenced bridge and chorus. Like fellow twins The Veronicas, Say Lou Lou are quite good at this kind of ‘love gone wrong’ musical despair!
If it wasn’t already obvious, this album is easily our favourite of the year so far. The lyrics are strong, the production is of international quality and whilst the girls are a little bit alternative, it is very much a pop record.
Albums like ‘Lucid Dreaming’ don’t come around often and it is a shame that local radio hasn’t quite got behind its singles yet.
The group have the look, the songs and the talent to go the distance.
Seriously, just listen to ‘Everything We Touch’. It really is quite good!
