German/Russian Producer Zedd had a killer 2014, largely thanks to his work on Ariana Grande’s ‘Break Free’. But if ‘True Colors’ is any indicator, the run of good times is set to keep going.
That’s because Zedd’s sophomore album is an exciting and melody-rich collection of songs destined for clubs and radio playlists.
Take first single ‘I Want You To Know’ for example. It’s a bit camp but undeniably catchy, thus setting the template for the rest of the album.
Second single ‘Beautiful Now’ is similarly good, but lacks the star power that Selena Gomez provides.
The producer extraordinaire is certainly not short of friends, working with the likes of US girl group Bahari and Troye Sivan of ‘Happy Little Pill’ fame. The Troye duet, ‘Papercut’, is one of the standouts on ‘True Colors’ with Troye’s nonchalant vocals an excellent match to the electro mid-tempo backing track.
‘Done With Love’ is another highlight, starting up with a Daft Punk vocoder-led introduction before exploding into a 1980s-influenced disco banger.
Elsewhere. you can enjoy the almost singer/songwriter vibe of ‘Daisy’ or the almost completely instrumental ‘Bumble Bee’. However, If you’re after a surefire pop stormer, look no further than ‘Straight Into The Fire’. With its Sia-esque vocal stylings and explosive post-chorus section, it’s surely a hit in waiting that could propel its vocalist Julia Michaels into the big time.
Admittedly, we’re possibly glossing over how some tracks seem to merge together with their pop verses and clubby choruses, but everything on here is of a very high quality. Even the most generic of songs would be standouts if given to other artists to fill up their albums.
We can also appreciate the restraint of only putting 11 songs on here when that’s probably the amount of songs Zedd had his fingerprints on in the last year alone!
‘True Colors’ is a really enjoyable album if you don’t think about it too much. It’s not trying to change the world; it’s just there to make you dance, with the occasional sentimental lyric or two.
On that front, ‘True Colors’ is undoubtedly a success.
