Earlier this week, we brought you the new video clip for Melbourne-based singer-songwriter Mike Waters.
‘Gambling Man’ is just another little taste of his just-released EP entitled ‘Life’ and it intrigued us. So much so that we decided that Mike would be a perfect candidate for our ‘Get To Know’ series.
So pour yourself a cup of tea and grab the nearest Mint Slice as we ask the questions and Mike delivers the answers in the latest edition of ‘Get To Know’.
Name. Mike Waters.
Where are you based? I grew up in Adelaide but I moved to Melbourne about four and a half years ago. I currently live in Northcote.
How did you get your start in music? Probably a longer story than we have room for here! I think the catalyst was a discussion I had with my good friend Shane a few years ago. Before I started writing songs, he was working in a similar field to me but also gigging around Melbourne. We had a discussion about how we shared a similar dream of a musical career and I began to question why I’d never actually pursued it before, so I decided to learn some songs and see if I could score a gig. Then I wrote a song and played it to some friends and they encouraged me to write more.
Tell us a little bit about your sound and how it developed. I call my sound sort of “indie-pop”, but I don’t really know where it fits. My influences range from punk rock to musical theatre, and I think all of those things can be heard in my tracks in one way or another. I’d tried songwriting when I was younger but it always felt so contrived to me because and I was trying to write songs that were like the songs I was listening to. After that discussion I had with Shane I sat in bed one day with my guitar, just to see what happened when I gave in to instinct – and I was surprised at what I got out of it!
Who have been your musical influences? My Mum was a huge influence on my musical tastes. She used to sing around the house a lot, and we always had mix tapes on family holidays that we would sing along to. That introduced me to a huge range of music. As far as musicians that have influenced me, I would say Tom Delonge of Blink 182 and Jesse Lacey of Brand New are my biggest influences.
What are your favourite songs of all time? Brand New – ‘Play Crack The Sky’, Hozier – ‘Cherry Wine’, Manchester Orchestra – ‘Shake it Out’.
Give us a little fun fact about yourself that people might not know. I’m a web developer, and a few years ago I made a website that went viral based around the ‘doge’ meme: www.plspetdoge.com
What’s the best advice you’ve been given in your career? Be honest in your music. It’s obvious when something is inauthentic.
Tell us about your latest release. I’ve just released my debut record, a four track EP called ‘LIFE’. It’s the first four songs that I’ve ever recorded, and they each reflect one of four very different aspects of my life that I think define me. There’s a whole lot of me in this EP by way of lyrics, music, design, effort. I had a lot of fun making it, but it was also testing at times because it’s full of stuff that is very personal to me, and it’s not always easy to make that available for public scrutiny.
What do your future plans involve? More of everything! I love songwriting and I cant wait to get back into the studio and record some new material. I also can’t wait to get touring for this EP and whatever other shows I have coming up. Longer term, who knows? But as long as I’m being honest with a creative art in some way I think I’ll be fulfilled.
