The Countdown To Eurovision is here.
As we’ve done here at auspOp for the past eight years, we’re taking a look at each and every one of the entries for the Eurovision competition, which will take place in the Swedish capital Stockholm in the middle of May, after Mans Zelmerlow placed first last year with ‘Heroes’.
We’re kicking proceedings off with Macedonia, who’ll take part in the second of the semi finals on May 12. And it’s a familiar face who’s carrying the hopes of the nation on her shoulders.
Kaliopi is somewhat of a legend in her homeland, having enjoyed a successful recording career, which led to her being part of the judging panel on their version of the ‘Idol’ competition.
And she’s no stranger to the Eurovision stage either, competing for Macedonia at the 2012 edition of the event in Azerbaijan, where she placed 13th.
She’ll be hoping to do better in 2016 with her single ‘Dona’, but we’re not sure whether the song is strong enough to make it out of the semi finals, let alone make it into single figures in the finals.
It sounds a little like one of those ’80s Bonnie Tyler-esque rock numbers, complete with husky vocals.
They might get a bit of the bloc voting from their Balkan neighbours, and kudos for being one of very few countries performing in their national tongue, but ‘Dona’ isn’t special enough for us.
