We’re not big on popping up cover versions willy nilly here on auspOp, but when Sydney singer/songwriter/producer Rocco Bene covers a Madonna classic and when said Queen Of Pop is now on Australian soil for the first time in almost 23 years, well we’ll make an exception.
Yes, Madonna landed in Melbourne last night ahead of her three shows in the city (the fan-only ‘Tears Of A Clown’ performance at the city’s Forum Theatre and the two arena shows), so what better time to pop up a little local tribute than now.
Not only is the track a new, thoroughly modern makeover for the Material Girl’s 1983 single, but it also comes with its own video clip, which sees the singer parading through the neon-lined streets of Tokyo, performing the track to camera.
“‘Lucky Star’ by Madonna is one of the coolest and most iconic tracks from the ’80s,” Rocco says. “When I was asked to record a cover, this was the first song that came to mind. I’m an ’80s child at heart and I wanted to take something from the past and give it a new life into the future and also pay homage to one of the world’s greatest and most talented stars – Madonna. I’m very proud how this turned out and I hope the Queen of Pop herself gives it the thumbs up. Hope you all enjoy it.”
As for you, Madonna, it’s been waaaayyy too long, but it’s nice to have you back.
