Hungary has had a chequered history in the Eurovision Song Contest; since first competing in 1993, they’ve failed to qualify for the Grand Final on four occasions, came top ten four times (top five twice) and didn’t participate at all in eight of those competitions.
But they’re on board again in 2016 and they’ll be hoping to do much better than their 20th place finish in last year’s final.
They’ve chosen former reality TV show contestant Gábor Alfréd Fehérvári, better known as Freddie (happy birthday today, by the way) as their entry this year, with the English language song ‘Pioneer’.
Freddie has a great rock vocal… gravelly and real. And the song itself gives it every opportunity to shine, with plenty of big stadium rock-esque moments. And there’s a great big note right towards the end, which will keep those playing their favourite Eurovision drinking games content and well lubricated.
How will it fare? It’ll probably get through to the Grand Final, but we’re not expecting it to place in the top five. Sept points.
