Lucky Spain… no need to be faffing about through the semi finals of the Eurovision 2016 competition. As one of the “Big Five”, they score an automatic berth in the Grand Final, alongside France, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom, as well as this year’s host nation Sweden.
Their entry this year is Bárbara Reyzábal González-Aller, who’s better known by her much simpler stage name Barei. And she’ll be performing an English language track called ‘Say Yay!’.
Barei’s had a little history with song competitions, though she’s not been through the usual TV suspects, preferring instead to build her career organically and, off the back of her selection to compete for Spain at Eurovision, she was afforded a record deal.
It’s been 21 years since Spain last finished in the top five at Eurovision. How will they fare this year?
‘Say Yay!’ is a high energy dance-pop number in a similar vein to stuff Jess Glynne’s tackled in the past couple of years. It’s fun, perky and and full of life, but it feels like there’s something missing. Huit points.
