Ladyhawke’s ‘My Delirium’, for my money was the song of 2009 when I first moved to Australia… and it made me fall head over heels for the New Zealand starlet.
‘Anxiety’ landed way back in 2012, so it’s been a four-year long wait for her third album. What has she come up with for round three?
During the four year break, Ladyhawke wanted to make sure what she released was “right.” She had previously written an album’s worth of material, but found it was quite dark and didn’t truly represent who she was. So she ditched its release and started again.
The wait has been worth it; ‘Wild Things’ shifts things forward without feeling like a repeat of albums one and two. Ladyhawke has grown up as an artist and it shows in the layers displayed in the music here.
Title track ‘Wild Things’ is exquisitely arranged and lifts you off to another world. I played it on repeat about six times in a row as I couldn’t get enough.
Lead single ‘A Love Song’ is fun and very catchy and ‘Chills’ was co-written with Babydaddy (of Scissor Sisters fame) and has a really funky vibe to it.
Overall the album is a great listen and is quite a diverse offering.
If you’re an existing fan or even a new one, there’s something to keep everyone happy on ‘Wild Things’.
Here’s hoping radio picks up on new single ‘Let It Roll’ – or even its predecessor ‘A Love Song’ – soon and she gets another hit album under her belt.
PS. Bring on the tour!
VERDICT : 4/5.
MUST LISTEN : A Love Song, Wild Things, Chills, Sweet Fascination.
