Greece has done pretty well for itself at the Eurovision Contest over the years, even winning the competition back in 2005 (Helena Paparizou’s ‘My Number One’) and placing third in 2001, 2004 and 2008.
But results have been less than stellar in the last couple of years; the country finishing 19th in 2015 and as low as 20th in 2014. Can six piece folk/pop outfit Argo reverse the trend? One listen to ‘Utopian Land’ and we suspect not.
The track’s filled with Balkan-style instrumentation, a splash of the English language in the (sung) choruses and a splash of Greek in the (rapped) verses. Points for actually including their native tongue, however.
But if their plan was to stand out with their song, they’ve pretty much achieved their aim. Sadly it’s not for the right reasons. Trois points.
