Latvia has the unenviable task of being the first country to perform in the second of this year’s Eurovision semi finals. But truth be told, it’s a heck of a lot better position than being buried somewhere deep in the running order where your performance could easily get lost.
The Latvians may have only been part of the competition since the turn of the century, but they’ve placed third once and they won the whole thing back in 2002. Performances in recent years, however, have been lacking, with a string of non-qualifications for the Grand Final. They fared somewhat better last year, finishing sixth overall.
Bright-eyed 21 year old performer Justs Sirmais will sing his heart out for his country, with a song called ‘Heartbeat’ which, for those playing along at home, is available o/s with 7th Heaven remixes.
It’s a dark little electro number with plenty of widespread appeal, helmed by Justs’ gravelly vocal. It’ll be interesting to see what the voting’s like on this – and how the track translates in the live arena. We’ll give it neuf points.
