Dami Im might not have won the Eurovision Song Contest over the weekend, but she’s seemingly a winner in the eyes of Australian music fans, who’ve sent her single ‘Sound Of Silence’ soaring to the top of the iTunes singles chart today.
It’s so far peaked at No.68 on the official ARIA charts (back in the middle of March), but its chart position today augers well for a better result come Saturday at 6pm.
While Dami didn’t win the competition, placing second to Ukraine, she did capture many hearts across Europe and she’s still pinching herself at the adulation and attention she garnered.
“Coming second in the Eurovision Song Contest is by far the most amazing achievement for me and for Australia. I will never forget the last two weeks,” she said in a statement released today.
“Congrats to Jamala and Ukraine! You were the deserving winner this year, I’m truly happy for you and wish you all the best! I’m so blessed to have met such wonderful artists from around the world and have made some amazing new friends. I know that everyone worked harder than anyone can imagine and should all be so proud of they achieved.
“Thank you Europe for inviting Australia to be a part of something so amazing! Thank you to all of those that voted! This is only the beginning, I can’t wait to bring more music to Europe. Watch out!”
It’s not just here in Australia that ‘Sound Of Silence’ has started making an iTunes chart impact in the wake of the competition… It’s been at No.1 in Lithuania, No.2 in Sweden, No.3 in Poland and Finland and as high as No.5 in both Greece and Belgium. It’s even made the top ten in Denmark, Israel, the Netherlands, Russia and Switzerland.
The boys who wrote ‘Sound Of Silence’ – Anthony Egizii and David Musumeci of DNA Songs – were crowned winners of the Eurovision Composer Award, voted on by the participating composers each year.
“We are over the moon to be the runner up winner of Eurovision 2016,” DNA said. “Dami has made Australia extremely proud! Although we didn’t bring the crown home, we’re humbled to take home the Composer Award for best song of Eurovision 2016! We’ve shown Europe that Australia is a force to be reckoned with.”
