The first of the Eurovision Song Contest semi finals was held in Stockholm early this morning Australian time, with ten countries progressing through to Saturday night’s mammoth Grand Final.
Naturally, we’ll not just be blurting out who those countries are without giving you a little bit of notice, just in case you want to remain blissfully unaware until the prime time telecast on SBS this Friday night.
THIS is where you tune out.
Despite their best efforts, eight of the 18 countries as part of this year’s first semi final didn’t make the cut. And those eight countries are (with links to our stories and edited comments on each);
BOSNIA & HERZEGOVINA :
“Just how they’ll fare in the grand scheme of things remains to be seen. Cinq points.”
“To be honest, we’re not really sure what to make of it. Six points.”
“The perfect way to kick start this year’s proceedings. Dix points.”
“If their plan was to stand out with their song, they’ve pretty much achieved their aim. Sadly it’s not for the right reasons. Trois points.”
“Let’s give it huit points.”
“It doesn’t feel special. Cinq points.”
“We’re not sure a top ten berth will be on the line. Cinq points.”
SAN MARINO :
“All up… it’s a bit of fun, but we don’t think it’ll make it through. Quatre points.”
So… for the most part, we were on the money.
With those eight nations failing to progress, the ten countries who’ve made it through to Saturday night’s Grand Final (in alphabetical order) are; Armenia, Austria, Azerbaijan, Croatia, Cyprus, Hungary, Malta, Netherlands and competition favourite Russia.
Those ten countries will battle it out with the victorious ten countries from Thursday night’s second semi final, plus host nation Sweden and the “big five” in Saturday night’s big Grand Final.
