It’s going to take a lot more than an on-stage seizure to dull the fire within Abbe May.
Yes, that incident (back in 2013) may have knocked her confidence around a little, but she’s drawn upon her inner strength and old-fashion concrete-like resilience to be back, stronger than ever and preparing for the release of her new album ‘Bitchcraft’.
“When I had the seizure it felt like a near death experience,” the singer explains. “The pressure threw me into the deep end of an existential crisis. I could barely keep my head above the water and I lost all the colour in my view. I spent two years recovering by clearing everything out of my life that wasn’t working for me. I got rid of people, habits, attitudes and parts of my lifestyle that made me stressed or anxious or depressed.
“At one point I wanted to die because I was in so much agony. I was lucky I had the support and will to get well again because now I feel supercharged. I’m actually so grateful the whole horror happened. I had to access my inner bitch in order to cut myself loose. That’s why the new album is called ‘Bitchcraft’. It would never exist if I hadn’t channeled the bitch.”
So, like Abbe herself, let’s cut the crap. ‘Bitchcraft’ is due later in the year and it’s been preceded by the lead single ‘Are We Flirting’?, which has just been added to rotation on Triple J.
And Abbe’s also announced a run of four live dates to celebrate its release, tickets for which are on sale tomorrow. You’d best buy one. We wouldn’t want to mess with her.
