What was potentially one of the worst kept secrets in the business last week has been confirmed; iconic British performer Sting will headline the pre-game show at next month’s AFL Grand Final at the MCG.
“It’s a great honour to be invited to perform at the biggest day in Australian sport,” Sting said in a statement. “I always have such an enjoyable time in Australia and I’m very much looking forward to returning to Melbourne next month.”
AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan was glowing in his praise of the musician.
“Sting is much loved the world over, and we couldn’t be more thrilled that he will join us on the biggest day of our year,” he said. “Sting, Vance Joy and The Living End will no doubt entertain fans of all ages for those who see them live at the MCG or during the Seven Network’s broadcast.”
Sting will join the already announced Vance Joy and The Living End to warm up the Grand Final day crowd, but won’t take part in the free post-game concert.
The 2016 AFL Grand Final hits the hallowed MCG surface on Saturday October 01.
