Former Brisbane native Youthfire is readying the release of his new single ‘Hallucinate’ later this month.
Raised on a diet of Phil Collins, Cyndi Lauper, Michael Jackson and even Tears For Fears, Youthfire (real name Stephen Carmichael) loves and breathes ’80s music.
But when that love of ’80s music collides with a heartfelt lyric about coming to terms with his sexuality, you get ‘Hallucinate’ and it gets you right in the feels.
“‘Hallucinate’ is a song that I’ve lived with for the last two years,” Youthfire reveals. “At the time, I began watching every single LGBTIQA+ movie that I could find. I stumbled across the film ‘Edge Of Seventeen’ and related with the main protagonist and the experiences he went through in coming out. This had a profound effect on me, inspiring me to write the track.”
Stephen’s vocals are almost ghostly here… virtually whispering over the intricate electronic soundtrack and soft beats.
And those ’80s influences are on show for all to see with more than a little tip of its hat to Bronski Beat’s ’80s classic ‘Smalltown Boy’.
You have the opportunity to catch Youthfire launching the single at the Evelyn in Melbourne on Monday November 21.
