You may remember Swedish performer Måns Zelmerlow from his star turn at Eurovision a couple of years back; winning the competition for his homeland.
But he’s now stepping away from his singing competition past and has just dropped his new album ‘Chameleon’. David gives us his thoughts.
Let’s be honest, you haven’t heard any other songs from Måns asides from ‘Heroes’, have you?
Yes, Eurovision may have put him on the radar of far more people, but he was already a fairly successful musician in his homeland of Sweden.
The album he released off the back of his win (2015’s ‘Perfectly Damaged’) was an enjoyable listen, as was his 2014 release ‘Barcelona Sessions’. So what does his sixth studio album have to offer and is he headed for global domination?
I will admit to having a man-crush on Måns for many reasons…. First and foremost, he is a handsome fellow. This fact doesn’t go unnoticed if you watched this years Eurovision contest.
He’s also got a gorgeous voice that he has a knack of bringing to life with the musical arrangements on his tracks. Sure the lyrics can be a bit goofy (see : ‘Happyland’) but it’s part of his charm. He’s also got something about him that sparks intrigue.
One of the things I admire on ‘Chameleon’ is that the genres shift between songs, but it’s still a truly enjoyable and consistent listen. His mix of pop and rock is a great fit and on songs like ‘Fire And The Rain’ you can’t help but get the melody stuck in your head.
‘Whistleblower’ hits on the tropical house sensation but not in an overly aggressive way. It’s catchy and I had the chorus in my head for several days. I am also a fan of the second track ‘Beautiful Lie’ for its chord progression, the lushness of the sound and how great his voice sounds.
The album does feel like not much has changed with Måns since ‘Heroes’, but that’s understandable.
Lead single ‘Glorious’ sounds a bit like a ‘Heroes’ copycat track and I think is a poor choice of opening song and lead single. It’s because of this song and lack of growth that I can’t give the album a perfect score.
Måns has done a great job in his sixth release and while his global domination will have to wait, I’m glad to have more of his music to add to my library.
Now would someone get onto Loreen and tell her to hurry up with her follow up album? It’s been too long!
VERDICT : 4/5.
MUST LISTEN : Beautiful Lie, Whistleblower, Fire In The Rain.
