It’s no secret that we love the artist who’s scored the No.2 Pop Single of 2016, but mainstream success has largely eluded her on this occasion.
Yes, her new album debuted at No.2 on her native UK chart (and No.20 here), but both singles released from it at this stage have failed to fire.
Which is a shame, because Emeli Sandé not only achieved a decent level of success with her 2012 debut album and the succession of singles from it, but the two singles from album two (‘Long Live The Angels’) have been pretty damned sublime.
But it’s ‘Hurts’ that gets our No.2 Pop Single Of 2016.
Dropping in the middle of September, ‘Hurts’ was the lyrical top coming off the pressure cooker.
“I wanted to release ‘Hurts’ first because it felt like everything I’d avoided saying for so long,” Emeli revealed. “It’s a real explosion. It’s everything I wish I’d said years and years ago. I didn’t want to hold anything back anymore.”
It’s Emeli’s delivery… that you can feel every single work she sings, it’s the cacophony of hand claps, it’s the build, it’s the drama, the strings and the gospel chorus.
We said of the single that it was “hands down one of our favourite tracks of the year thus far” and it’s remained so right here at the pointy end. We loved it so much that after EMI serviced us with the truncated single version back in September, we immediately rushed to our favourite digital retailer to get the longer album version. We couldn’t get enough.
Our No.2 Pop Single Of 2016 is Emeli Sandé’s ‘Hurts’.
