The team from ARIA has today revealed their 2016 End Of Year Charts, once again giving us insight into what we loved throughout the past year.
It’ll come as no surprise to most that The Chainsmokers’ mammoth seven times platinum chart hit ‘Closer’ (with Halsey) topped the year-end singles chart.
And there was no slowing down Australians’ appetites for Adele over on the albums side of things; the album spending a staggering 45 weeks within the ARIA top ten throughout 2016.
Encouraging for the local sector will be news that 31 homegrown LPs made the cut in the top 100 albums list, but less encouraging is that only 15 Aussies made up the top 100 on the singles front.
“2016 was an exciting year on the ARIA Charts, and proved to be an outstanding year for our local artists with 22 Australian singles and albums soaring to the top of the charts – seven up from 2015,” ARIA CEO Dan Rosen said in a statement.
“It is extremely pleasing to see 31 Aussie albums in top 100 this year. This is a great achievement for our local industry and shows how Australian music fans have embraced our local artists.
“Congratulations to all of the artists that featured on the 2016 ARIA charts, in particular The Chainsmokers who topped the ARIA end of year singles chart with ‘Closer’ featuring Halsey and Adele who topped the ARIA end of year albums chart for a second year running with ‘25’.
“After such a great year, I look forward to what lies ahead on the ARIA charts in 2017.”
