Yes, we all had a laugh when Jedward bounced across the Eurovision stage in 2011 with their earworm ‘Lipstick’.
We may very well have laughed, but the boys’ appearance that year was Ireland’s best result since 2001.
In fact, since ‘Lipstick’, Ireland placed last in the Grand Final once and has failed to qualify for the Grand Final in the past three years. That’s even with former Westlife star Nicki Byrne on duty last year.
In 2017, the Irish have enlisted the services of Brendan Murray, a plucky young chap who was once a member of short-lived Irish boyband Hometown.
His single ‘Dying To Try’ is co-penned by John Newman’s brother James, along with serial Swedish hitwriter Jorgen Elofsson; so a decent pop pedigree then.
It’s a big pop ballad; the kind of track that you’d anticipate might come from a boyband ala Westlife/Boyzone etc.
And Eurovision drinking game participants beware… it’s got big notes and a key change.
It’s not a bad track, but we think the Irish may find things difficult to be heard in the mire.
