You’ve got to feel sorry for the poor old Brits; they can’t take a trick at the Eurovision Song Contest.
Since 2003, they’ve come stone cold last three times, the Engelbert Humperdinck and Bonnie Tyler experiments failed; even the more youthful Electro Velvet and Joe & Jake in 2015 and 2016 respectively failed to fire, both finishing 24th.
Throw in a bitter divorce from the rest of Europe this year and that ostracisation may be felt even more deeply.
Nonetheless, 2009 ‘X Factor’ contestant Lucie Jones is up for the challenge. And she’s armed with a big ballad in the shape of ‘Never Give Up On You’ (perhaps the Brits’ ode to the rest of Europe after dumping them).
Interesting fact about the single is that it was co-penned by Emmelie de Forest, who tasted her own Eurovision success, winning the competition back in 2013 with ‘Only Teardrops’.
It’s a big, bold ballad. With big booming vocals. And, of course, Lucie will only have to perform it once, given the UK is part of the “big five” and is therefore granted automatic entry into the Grand Final.

Huit points.
