Missed Frankmusik dropping his new ‘SS17’ EP just recently? Don’t worry, David’s got you covered with his latest review!
It’s no secret that I have a soft spot for Frankmusik and when he releases new tunes, they’re always worth a listen.
He’s come a long way since ‘Complete Me’ and, fully independent for the past several years, we have been treated to some great music. The beauty of controlling your own stuff is that you get to create what you like, when you like.
Taking inspiration from the world of fashion, his latest EP ‘SS17’ is the summer collection of his work and it’s slinky and sophisticated.
If you’re expecting a super uptempo, fun and light EP, you’re in the wrong place.
This isn’t summer music primed for playing at your pool party… it’s for the late night drinks sitting by a bonfire.
I think this actually benefits those of us located in the southern hemisphere as we are gifted some refined tunes well suited to winter nights by an indoor fire (or outdoor if you’re brave!).
Frankmusik has spent a lot of time crafting sonically rich songs which, paired with his voice (I may have fangirled over his falsetto on my previous review for his ‘Daybreak‘ EP), make a great combination.
Driving back from a weekend away, this short EP offered an excellent soundtrack to the passing landscapes. Sweeping melodic lines and almost pastoral lyrical stories lend themselves to good driving music. That’s good value folks!
I love when an EP bookends its best tunes for the listener as it creates a great musical sandwich.
Opening track ‘June 17th’ offers some of the warmest soundscapes I’ve heard in recent months. It’s electronic, it’s pop, but it’s also genuinely Frankmusik.
EP closer ‘Without You; is about as upbeat as it gets in this offering. A great beat with a catchy melody, this song sounds like it could have been written for Mariah Carey (which is a good thing).
If I had one piece of criticism, it’s that there aren’t enough upbeat songs on offer here, which means it leaves the EP feeling a little more muted than I would have liked. For the summer season, I’d expect a little more lightness. But even then, it’s still an enjoyable listen.
We will get another release in the autumn and I will be curious to see what Frankmusik has planned for that one.
Yes, he’s been busy working with other artists on their releases, but it’s great to see him release new music all on his own with his own unique vision to share.
VERDICT : 4/5.
MUST LISTEN : June 17th, Without You.
