It’s no secret that our reviewer David is a fan of British performer Frankmusik. But what will he make of his new ‘AW 17’ EP?
When Frankmusik announced he’d be releasing 2 EPs this year to follow the fashion industry trend of releasing for the seasons, I was incredibly excited.
The first EP (‘SS17’) got high praise from me when I reviewed it back in June and I was curious to see what he had in store for this release.
Accidently released early, ‘AW17’ is a great wind down to the northern hemisphere’s summer and a nice closer to the southern hemisphere’s winter.
Taking a similar approach to his more recent releases, the arrangements are lush electronic symphonies matched to his distinct and confident vocals.
The first half of the album links nicely to his previous EP and follows a more mid-tempo and laid back approach.
My favourite tracks come later in the EP, with stunning electro-ballad ‘It’s Over’ taking the limelight. Simple production, melancholic lyrics and a poignant performance from Frankmusik is a fabulous reminder of just how talented he is.
I have said it before and I’ll say it again… it’s rare to find high quality independent pop releases, but he always manages to produce stuff that sounds like it’s had major label investment; a true testament to how talented of a musician he is.
‘Call Your Name’ and ‘Rest Of Us’ take a more energised approach and takes us back to Frankmusik of yesteryears. It’s fun, it’s light and the way electronic-pop music should be. I suppose this is why I am such a fan of his work – it’s not about complicating what good pop music is about.
I continue to enjoy Frankmusik’s music and I look forward to each release.
If you had forgotten why you should be giving his songs a listen, this EP will remind you.
VERDICT : 4/5.
MUST LISTEN : Call Your Name, It’s Over, Rest Of Us.
