Picking one song that shines above all others is never an easy task, but here we are with our No.1 Pop Single of 2017.
And while we deliberated long and hard in terms of popping P!nk up there with her smash ‘What About Us’, in the spirit of celebrating great Australian pop (that’s what we’re here for), we decided to hand the keys to No.1 over to a local.
When Ruel’s ‘Don’t Tell Me’ hit in the middle of July, it floored us.
So much so that we called it… “Single Of The Year Contender,” we said.
Not only for the fact that the track was oozing with class, dripping with soul, overflowing with feeling and blessed with first rate production thanks to M-Phazes.
It was also written by Ruel himself as a 12 year old. And then released when he was just two years older.
Yep, the kid isn’t even legal yet and he’s whacked out a glorious gem of a song as strong as this.
“‘Don’t Tell Me’ is staggeringly good; beautifully vocalled, impassioned and laced with nuances that are way beyond Ruel’s tender years,” we said when the video was released months afterwards. “It’s astonishing to contemplate that, if he’s this good at just 14, where’s he going to be in five or ten years from now?”
He’s a superstar, plain and simple. And big things await for Ruel in 2018.
So let’s close off 2017 by throwing a Single Of The Year gong in his direction…
Ladies and gents, Ruel’s ‘Don’t Tell Me’ is our No.1 Pop Single Of 2017.
