Brad shot across a series of questions for the Mashd N Kutcher boys and they answered them… it’s the latest auspOp Q&A.
Mashd N Kutcher are two DJs from Brissy who tour the world over and boast over 1.2 million followers on Facebook.
The boys are set to join superstar DJs Axwell /\ Ingrosso and Afrojack at Road To Ultra in Melbourne on February 24 after supporting the legendary Tiesto last week in Sydney.
They’ve scored more than 10 million Spotify streams with reworks of hits from the ’90s to now including Art vs Science on ‘Do It Now’, Len on ‘Steal My Sunshine’, and their current single ‘Need Me’ which is a throwback to The Cardigans classic ‘Lovefool’. Find out more about the boys below…
Q. Hi boys! How you feeling after playing at the Fifty Shades Freed premiere?
A. Pretty good! We got all fancy looking and played some tunes to some interestingly dressed people. It was cool! It was fun…
Q. Any celebrities you saw there?
A. We were told they were celebrities but from our personal perspective, we didn’t quite see that. They certainly acted like they were though haha.
Q. What else have you guys been up to? I heard you were in India recently…?
A. Yes! Three shows – Friday, Saturday, Sunday. It was good man! Somewhere we’ve never been professionally, obviously a pretty special thing to do and they really got around us. One of the events was a college show to 20,000 people so I’m really glad we did it!
Q. That’s phenomenal! Also you’ve got a Tiesto support – obviously a legend and has been voted world No.1 DJ three times. What’s it like to be offered the opportunity?
A. He’s definitely the biggest act we’ve ever supported. It’s an honour and we’re excited to be able to get to meet him and thank him for everything he’s done for electronic music.
Q. Also you’ve got Road To Ultra in Melbourne – Australia’s introduction to the world famous Ultra Music Festival. Have you attended any of the festivals around the world?
A. No we haven’t – this would be our first time.
Q. You’ve got massive international DJs Axwell /\ Ingrosso & Afrojack as well as Aussie DJs Will Sparks and Timmy Trumpet. You’ve been billed to play a set with Tigerlily – hows that going to work?
A. We can’t wait! Going to be so good. We haven’t actually figured out the logistics with her yet but the three of us will be on the stage at the same time at some point in that window.
Q. Tigerlily has changed a little by starting to get her vocals out there. Do you guys sing at all?
A. Definitely not. I’m big on singing in the shower – love that reverb – but no we won’t be singing. We’ll be playing instruments as we always do… she might sing a bit. It would be a good dynamic.
Q. Would you be up for playing Ultra Music Festival again next year?
A. Definitely! Thats the plan – we’d love to be part of that lineup.
Q. You’ve got your current single ‘Need Me’ out now – which contains elements of The Cardigans’ ’90s classic ‘Lovefool’. What was the inspiration behind that?
A. It was definitely something we listened to a lot growing up and it kinda stuck with us so we wanted to pay homage to it.
Q. You’ve also sampled Art Vs Science on ‘Do It Now’ and Len with ‘My Sunshine’ – hits from the ’90s to now. Could you imagine going back further to the ’70s and ’80s?
A. It’s possible but probably not. We’re ’90s kids so it’s the music we know best. I think we’ll continue to see other acts pay homage to the ’90s cause it’s just that time for it.
Q. What’s been your strangest experience so far whilst touring?
A. We haven’t ever had anything too drastic like a fan at a hotel or something. It’s always so unexpected – it feels like the gigs we expect to be average turn out awesome and the ones we think will be great that get weird.
Q. Do you have a highlight so far?
A. It feels like the highlight is just to come with Ultra!
Q. What are you most excited about with Ultra?
A. Definitely keen to meet the Swedes (Axwell /\ Ingrosso) – wanna play a bit of table tennis. Get in their heads a bit before they play. See if we can knock them off their game with some aggressive banter hahaha.
Q. Do you reckon you’ll try to make a viral video out of that?
A. Nah nah we take this very seriously. We need full focus and concentration.
Q. Your viral videos are hilarious though. I especially loved the one about Aussie DJs overdoing the airhorn…
A. Oh yes! That was good fun.
Q. Do you ever use the airhorn in your sets?
A. Sometimes. I mean the airhorn is important. It’s loved in the world of trap – gotta use it at every available moment.
Q. What can we expect next for Mashd N Kutcher?
A. More airhorn really haha. Lots of airhorn. Tiesto, Ultra, airhorn…
Q. More music?
A. Yes! More music. This is the most prepared we’ve ever been and so we’re keen to get a couple more songs out this year.
