David’s back with his first review of 2018, casting his critical ear over the Camila Cabello album, simply entitled ‘Camila’.
She’s already scored a No.1 with the breakout single from it, ‘Havana’.
She’s also just popped into the Aussie top ten over the weekend with the follow-up, ‘Never Be The Same’.
But what will David make of the long player? Hit or miss?
I’m not entirely sure why, but girl groups in the pop landscape can’t seem to settle long term. A large majority end up breaking up and it often becomes a bit of a mess in the aftermath.
While Fifth Harmony didn’t break up, Camila Cabello’s desire to go solo certainly went down like a lead balloon. With her debut solo album now charting across the globe, has she had the last laugh?
In short, yes she has. ‘Camila’ is self-assured, personal and catchy from start to finish.
It’d be remiss of me not to mention the mega hit ‘Havana’ and how it’s launched her solo career properly but I find the song a bit too low key. While it’s not like a lot of songs out there, her voice sounds better on several other tracks here. It’s a sleeper hit to me.
Second single ‘Never Be The Same’ shows off her vocal range and control and is a gorgeous mid-tempo banger. To me this is a far better choice in single and is a great follow up to ‘Havana’. Yes, it contains some drug references but in the context of the song, it works. It’s hard to get out of your head.
Another great tune is ‘She Loves Control’. Produced by Skrillex, it’s a catchy, original sounding track. To me it’s a good choice for the next single and hopefully it gets a good video treatment should they decide it’s the one.
The rest of the album chugs along nicely and is an enjoyable listen.
As far as debut albums go, it’s done a great job of showcasing Camila and her musical direction.
It doesn’t exactly set a new bar for high quality pop music, but it doesn’t have to.
She’s a bright star and I look forward to her future musical adventures while I enjoy this one.
VERDICT : 3/5.
MUST LISTEN : Never Be The Same, She Loves Control, Inside Out.
