Welcome to edition #466 of ARIA Chart Watch, our weekly wrap of the ARIA top 100 singles and albums charts.
Now that Ed Sheeran has vacated our shores, will his singles and albums be taking a tumble? Will he be holding on to that coveted No.1 spot on the ARIA albums chart?
Let’s peel back the layers of this week’s ARIA top 100s and take a look, shall we?
SINGLES
Here on the ARIA singles chart, it still Drake flying high in the No.1 spot with his hit ‘God’s Plan’, despite a couple of concerted challenges throughout the course of the week.
Drake’s now been No.1 for nine weeks straight and he’s once again holding off Post Malone’s ‘Psycho’ and, thanks to her appearance on the Bruno Mars tour, Dua Lipa’s fast-charging ‘IDGAF’, which is up five to a new peak of No.3.
Marshmello and Anne Marie continue their climb this week with ‘Friends’, now top five (No.6 to No.4).
But the big move comes from Lil Dicky, whose track ‘Freaky Friday’ rockets from a No.18 debut to No.5; a great result for him.
A great result also for Shawn Mendes’ new single ‘In My Blood’, which debuts strongly in the No.9 spot (his fourth Aussie top ten hit).
Now that Ed Sheeran’s tour is over, his single ‘Perfect’ vacates the top ten, slumping nine places from No.3.
His track with Eminem, ‘River’, is also a little lower this week (No.13 to No.18).
Justin Timberlake’s collaboration with country star Chris Stapleton, ‘Say Something’, has been hovering around the No.20 mark on the ARIA countdown for a month or more now, never getting any higher than No.19. But it’s done enough during its nine week stay to notch the week’s first accreditation… platinum, meaning that it’s sold through in excess of 70,000 units domestically.
Ed Sheeran’s ‘Shape Of You’ is down slightly (No.19 to No.25), Camila Cabello’s ‘Havana’ hits a new milestone of seven times platinum (490,000 units) at No.26, while that other new Shawn Mendes track (‘Lost In Japan’) enters the ARIA countdown at No.27.
Dua Lipa’s ‘New Rules’ is up (No.39 to No.30), while ‘Let You Down’ by NF is slightly lower, albeit with a shiny new triple platinum certification to call its own (210,000 units).
Migos’s ‘Stir Fry’ goes gold (35,000 units) at No.33 and there’s a glimmer of light for Taylor Swift, with her new single ‘Delicate’ racing from a No.56 debut to No.38.
N.E.R.D’s ‘Lemon’ wasn’t to everyone’s palate when it first dropped last year. But now, thanks to a remix and the inclusion of Drake, it’s got a second lease on life and bullets from No.63 to No.44. That’s now four places higher than its original peak of No.48 back in 2017.
Also flying high this week is New Zealand songstress Robinson and her breakout hit ‘Nothing To Regret’. After debuting at No.100 a couple of weeks back, it jumped to No.68 last week and is a further 22 places higher this week and into the ARIA top 50.
Kygo’s ‘Remind Me To Forget’ also joins the top 50 party, up to No.48 from last week’s No.52 debut.
Khalid’s ‘Young Dumb & Broke’ vacates the ARIA top 50 this week (down from No.47 to No.54), but it waves its hat on its way out with a new fifth platinum certification (350,000 units).
Ed Sheeran’s ‘Castle On The Hill’ is closed for top 50 business (No.42 to No.57), while Sheppard’s ‘Coming Home’ loses ten spots to No.59.
With his new single ‘You Are The Reason’ finding its feet ever so slowly, Calum Scott’s cover of Robyn’s ‘Dancing On My Own’ is up again (No.76 to No.61).
But Ed Sheeran’s ‘Galway Girl’ is out of favour post-tour (No.43 to No.62).
King Princess premieres at No.65 with ‘1950’, but Bad Wolves’ ‘Zombie’ is heading back towards the ARIA graveyard (No.51 to No.66).
The news is good for Australia’s own Alison Wonderland, with audiences slowly taking their spots on the pew for her ‘Church’ (No.88 to No.71).
Sam Smith’s ‘Too Good At Goodbyes’ is up 11 (No.83 to No.72), David Guetta and Martin Garrix’s ‘Like I Do’ is up 20 (No.93 on debut to No.73) and there’s a No.74 debut for the Rae Sremmurd/Swae Lee single ‘Powerglide’.
Ed Sheeran’s singles continue to drop; ‘Thinking Out Loud’ down from No.59 to No.76.
The ups and downs continue; Lauv’s ‘I Like Me Better’ down (No.65 to No.81), Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee’s ‘Despacito’ up (No.95 to No.82), Camelphat & Elderbrook’s ‘Cola’ down (No.61 to No.83).
But there are debuts for Keith Urban and Julia Michaels’ ‘Coming Home’ (No.84), Migos’ latest track ‘Walk It Talk It’ (No.87) and for Panic! At The Disco’s ‘Say Amen (Saturday Night)’ (No.90).
Not such a great week for David Guetta and Afrojack’s ‘Dirty Sexy Money’, however. It loses a huge 35 places to be down to No.92. Ed Sheeran’s ‘Happier’ also takes a dive, down 32 to No.94.
The Chainsmokers and Coldplay have been teetering around the 100 mark for a couple of weeks. They’re at No.98 this week with ‘Something Just Like This’, but in the single’s 57th week of ARIA chart action, it picks up a fresh new seventh platinum certification.
Delta Goodrem’s ‘Think About You’ is down 19 (No.80 to No.99), SZA’s ‘The Weekend’ down 23 (No.77 to No.100).
Ed Sheeran’s ‘Supermarket Flowers’, ‘Dive’, ‘Photograph’ and ‘The A Team’ are all gone from the ARIA top 100.
ALBUMS
So Ed Sheeran’s singles all took a tumble on the ARIA singles chart this week following the conclusion of his national tour. But not so his album ‘÷’.
No, that still holds steady in the No.1 spot on the ARIA albums chart; in the process keeping ‘The Greatest Showman’ soundtrack in the No.2 position and dashing Dami Im’s hopes of a No.1 album.
Dami’s new covers set (‘I Hear A Song’) debuts strongly, however, at No.3; a result mirroring the peak of her previous album ‘Classic Carpenters’ a couple of years back.
Bruno Mars is at four, Ed Sheeran’s ‘x’ is at five and XXXTentacion’s ‘?’ is at six, dropping just three spaces from last week’s No.3 debut.
George Ezra’s recent Aussie promo trip pays dividends, with his new long player ‘Staying At Tamara’s’ premiering at No.7. It’s not quite up to the No.4 standard of his 2014 debut ‘Wanted On Voyage’, but he’ll no doubt take it.
The Wolfe Brothers also score some top ten love this week; their new album ‘Country Heart’ debuting at No.9.
But Jack White just misses the top ten on debut with his latest long player ‘Boarding House Reach’. It’s into the ARIA countdown at No.11.
The teens and 20s are relatively settled, save for a No.46 to No.25 jump for Taylor Swift’s ‘1989’, a No.11 to No.27 drop for Luke Bryan’s ‘What Makes You Country’ and a No.17 to No.29 drop for Logic’s ‘Bobby Tarantino II’.
‘The Singles’ by Phil Collins is back (No.36 on re-entry) and The Wiggles’ best-of is selling like hot potatoes (hot potatoes), up from No.49 to No.37.
The comeback of Shawn Mendes results in a halo effect around his previous album ‘Illuminate’. It was down at the bottom end of the top 100 last week (No.81 to be precise), but finds itself 40 places higher this time around.
Justin Bieber’s ‘Purpose’ is also higher this week, jumping 15 to No.42.
But with CMC Rocks Queensland over for another year, Luke Combs’ album ‘This One’s For You’ takes a tumble. A 34 place tumble (from No.16 to No.50).
Ian Moss’s new self-titled set also slumps, down from No.23 to No.54.
We’ve got a No.58 debut for the new ‘California’ EP from Diplo and a re-entry two spots lower from Led Zeppelin’s ‘How The West Was Won’.
‘ABBA Gold & More’ is back into the chart at No.65; the original ‘ABBA Gold’ up 23 to No.68.
But the news isn’t good for Luke Bryan’s ‘Crash My Party’. Flying high at No.39 last week, the country star’s 2013 album tanks 40 places to No.79 this week. Staggeringly, his last record ‘Kill The Lights’ also falls by precisely the same amount (No.48 to No.88).
Billy Ray Cyrus’s album ‘Thin Line’ plunges more than 80 places from last week’s No.20 debut.
Dustin Lynch’s ‘Current Mood’ won’t be quite so buoyant, having dropped more than 66 places since last week. And Stone Temple Pilots’ re-package of ‘Stone Temple Pilots’ also falls out of top 100 favour, having debuted at No.38 last week.
