It’s new number ones all ’round on this week’s ARIA Chart Watch, but who’s dislodged Drake and Kylie respectively? And how far have both fallen from the top?
Find out in the paragraphs below; it’s a scintillating edition #469 of ARIA Chart Watch!
SINGLES
Yes, just like has happened in the UK overnight, Drake has lost his grip on the ARIA No.1 position with his single ‘God’s Plan’ after a huge eleven week run.
But just like in the UK, he’s been replaced in the No.1 position by… himself.
The Canadian superstar’s latest single ‘Nice For What’ debuted strongly in the No.7 position on last weekend’s countdown, but it’s clearly quickly found favour with local audiences, bulleting all the way to the No.1 spot.
‘God’s Plan’ is down from one to three, leaving Post Malone’s hit ‘Psycho’ wedged there at No.2.
Though it’s down from four to six this week, Lil Dicky’s ‘Freaky Friday’ has impressed enough during its five weeks on the countdown to achieve a gold certification, for sales in excess of 35,000 units.
Marshmello and Anne Marie also score the accreditation goods this week, picking up platinum with their single ‘Friends’ (No.5 to No.7).
After debuting respectably at No.17 last Saturday, the Calvin Harris/Dua Lipa collaboration hits its straps, picking up eight positions and blasting its way into the top ten (No.17 to No.9).
Rudimental’s ‘These Days’ has a dalliance with double platinum (140,000 units) at No.10, while Ed Sheeran’s ‘Perfect’, which drops only one place lower (No.13 to No.14) finally picks up its impressive eighth platinum certification, meaning that more than 560,000 units have been sold across Australia.
Noah Kahan’s ‘Hurt Somebody’ (with Julia Michaels) continues its ascension, improving from No.22 to a new peak of No.16.
Bazzi’s ‘Mine’ hits platinum (No.17), Justin Timberlake’s ‘Say Something’ is up three to a new peak of No.18 and BlocBoy JB scores a gold certification for ‘Look Alive’ (up one to equal its highest peak thus far of No.24).
Cardi B is most definitely on the up with her latest single ‘Look Alive’, which rockets from a No.79 debut to No.25, no doubt helped along by the recent release of her debut album.
Bad Wolves have been howling from the top of the iTunes singles chart throughout the week, but mere downloads count for little with the advent of streaming, meaning it can only manage a ten place jump to No.26 on the official countdown.
New Zealand songstress Robinson continues to edge her way up the countdown too; ‘Nothing To Regret’ four places higher and into the top 30 at No.27.
Former One Direction star Zayn clearly doesn’t have the pulling power he once did; while his new solo single ‘Let Me’ scores the highest debut of the week, that debut comes in the No.29 position. No doubt he and his team at Sony will be hoping for a massively improved result over the coming weeks.
Portugal The Man’s ‘Feel It Still’ continues to tick over in the 30s on the ARIA countdown. And this week, the former top five smash ticks over into four times platinum territory (280,000 unit sales).
Kygo’s ‘Remind Me To Forget’ is up six (No.43 to No.37), Amy Shark’s new single ‘I Said Hi’ is new at No.38 and ‘Barbie Tingz’ is the strongest performing of the two new Nicki Minaj singles, entering the Australian singles chart at No.41 (the other new single – ‘Chun-Li’ – misses the top 50 on debut, new at No.54).
5 Seconds Of Summer’s ‘Youngblood’ is new at No.46, The Weeknd’s ‘Wasted Times’ wasted no time in evacuating the top 40 (No.30 to No.49) and the Migos track ‘Walk It Talk It’ is on the right trajectory for a top 50 entry next week, improving from No.64 to No.55.
Also in the lower half of the top 100 chart, Troye Sivan picks up a new platinum certification for his single ‘My My My’ (No.53 to No.58). It’s now sold in excess of 70,000 units in its 14 weeks on the countdown.
Kyle bullets with ‘Playinwitme’ (No.85 on debut to No.64), but Alison Wonderland’s ‘Church’ drops back a dozen after peaking last week at No.54.
Migos’ ‘Stir Fry’ loses ten (No.57 to No.67), while Hailee Steinfeld and BloodPop’s ‘Capital Letters’ loses a whole lot more (23 to be precise), down to No.68.
Calum Scott’s ‘Dancing On My Own’ is up (No.91 to No.70); so too David Guetta and Sia’s ‘Flames’ (No.96 to a new peak of No.74).
But Cardi B’s ‘Drip’ drops (No.60 to No.77), as do Peking Duk’s ‘Wasted’ (No.66 to No.80) and The Weeknd’s ‘Try Me’ (No.55 to No.81).
Though its release was perfectly timed to coincide with today’s Record Store Day, Florence & The Machine’s single ‘Sky Full Of Song’ didn’t really do the business on the ARIA singles chart, limping into the countdown at No.87 on debut.
Zac Efron and Zendaya hit platinum with ‘Rewrite The Stars’ (No.81 to No.91) and a trio of re-entries follow; James Arthur’s eight times platinum ‘Say You Won’t Let Go’, Zayn and Sia’s four times platinum ‘Dusk Till Dawn’ and Sheppard’s platinum ‘Coming Home’ in positions 92, 93 and 94 respectively.
Ed Sheeran’s ‘Galway Girl’ scores a new certification in position 95. It’s now five times platinum on account of sales in excess of 350,000 units.
Th Chainsmokers’ 13 times platinum ‘Closer’ is back at No.97 and Ed Sheeran’s 11 times platinum ‘Thinking Out Loud’ returns at No.98.
The news isn’t great for Delta Goodrem, however. Despite a clever marketing trick from her label Sony (two CD singles, no less), plus a starring role in the swivel chair on the new series of ‘The Voice’, Delts’ single plummets more than 81 places from No.19 and is gone from the top 100 entirely.
Rita Ora’s ‘Anywhere’ loses more than 30 spots and is also gone from the top 100, but waves us goodbye with a shiny new double platinum accreditation on its way out the door.
ALBUMS
Right, so we know that Kylie has been replaced in the No.1 spot on the ARIA singles chart.
But we’re happy to report that she’s been replaced by another Aussie, in the form of Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu.
The performer’s posthumous release ‘Djamirri (Child Of The Rainbow)’ is also his first ever No.1 album, after his previous three releases (2008’s ‘Gurrumul’, 2011’s ‘Rrakala’ and 2015’s ‘The Gospel Album’) all peaked at No.3.
According to his publicists earlier in the week, some stores reported stock shortages of the new LP, suggesting it could hang around in the top ten for a few weeks more.
The rest of the top five belongs to Ed Sheeran, ‘The Greatest Showman’, Kylie and Cardi B respectively.
While Gurrumul is shining at the pointy end of the top ten on debut, Breaking Benjamin and Jason Aldean are doing so on the opposite end with their latest long players; ‘Ember’ by the former new at No.9 and ‘Rearview Town’ by the latter new at No.10.
Hillsong’s album ‘There Is More’ debuted right behind Kylie last week at No.2, but slides nine in week two.
Further down this week’s album list is a 13 place jump for Kendrick Lamar’s ‘Damn’ (No.38 to No.25) and a new entry for the new Pentatonix LP ‘Top Pop Vol.1’ (No.26).
Greta Bradman and the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra also feel the top 50 love, with a No.30 debut for their album ‘Home’, as do Melbourne’s Confidence Man with their album ‘Confident Music For Confident People’ (No.31).
The Hard Aches score at No.36 with ‘Mess’ and the Elton John tribute on TV this week sees his latest best-of ‘Diamonds’ rocket (man) from No.92 to No.37.
The Bazzi debut (‘Cosmic’) enters at No.41, George Ezra’s ‘Staying At Tamara’s’ slides ten (No.33 to No.43) and Alison Wonderland’s new album ‘Awake’ takes a tumble, losing 37 places from last week’s No.7 debut.
Dami Im’s album ‘I Hear A Song’ is already gone from the top 50 after just three weeks inside it, down 18 places to No.52.
Lorde’s ‘Melodrama’ is down 17 (No.36 to No.53), Camila Cabello’s ‘Camila’ is down nine (No.45 to No.54) and Bruno Mars’ ‘Doo-Wops & Hooligans’ loses 13 (No.43 to No.56).
There’s a No.61 debut for Stonefield’s ‘Far From Earth’, a No.64 debut for Chalkie White’s ‘My Song Isn’t Written Yet’ and a massive 59 place slump from 30 Seconds To Mars’ ‘America’ (No.10 on debut to No.69).
Tinashe hits with ‘Joyride’ (No.76 on debut), but Logic’s ‘Bobby Tarantino II’ tumbles 28 places to No.90 in week six.
The news also isn’t grand for City Calm Down, Aunty Donna or Cosmic Psychos, whose albums were all well within the ARIA top 50 last week (Nos.20, 30 and 37 on debut respectively). All are now gone entirely from the ARIA top 100.
