Cyprus has the task of bringing the first semi final of the 2018 Eurovision Song Contest to a close with their song ‘Fuego’.
But will it set the competition alight and stand out from the crowd? Will it make it through to the Grand Final on May 12? Or will the Cypriots crash and burn?
Cyprus hasn’t had a brilliant run at Eurovision of late. Since 2006 they’ve finished in the top 20 only once, they’ve failed to qualify six times and in 2014 didn’t even participate.
So they’ve got some work to do if they’ve got any hope of taking out this year’s crown in Lisbon.
What they will have this year, however, is 31 year old pop songstress Eleni Foureira.
After multiple attempts to become Greece’s representative in the competition, she’s jumped ship to Cyprus.
‘Fuego’ oozes with commercial appeal; put plainly, if Camila Cabello’s name was on this track right now, it’d be a global smash.
So it has the appeal, it has an awesome music video. But will it get the support of the European voting audience?
