We get to know Kezra, whose new single ‘Better Place’ had us hook, line and sinker from the first listen.
We gave you a little introduction to the track in a story which went live on Monday. And so enamoured are we by it that we decided to shoot across our pressing questions to Kezra in the hope of getting to know her more.
So without further ado, may we introduce our latest Get To Know feature with Kezra.
01. Name : KEZRA.
02. Where are you based? Bayside, Melbourne.
03. How did you get your start in music? I’ve always been involved with music from a young age, my family use to take me to this local group performance class for kids where I would just get to learn songs and sing every week, it was the best!
Learning guitar was the best choice I made – because I started to really focus on writing my own original music.
From there I started going to open mic nights, then eventually playing my own original shows and getting into the festival scene.
It was a long road, but I’m definitely exactly where I want to be with my music – creating what I love and being able to share it with everyone.
04. Give us five words to best describe you as an artist. Energetic. Soulful. Vibrant. Chilled. Happy.
05. Tell us a little bit about your sound and how it developed. I’ve really been searching for ‘My Sound’ for the past few years. As a songwriter I’m not stuck in one mind set to creating music. One day I can create a total blues track and the next a pop ballad.
As I’ve been writing I’ve been drawn to the sound of simple keys/guitar, soft verby vocals and a driving beat which makes you want to move. So I began to focus more on the production and making sure there’s a killer beat on the track.
When I met Mark Zito (Fractures), he really helped elevate all those ideas I had in my mind and turned them into my new single ‘Better Place’.
06. What’s your earliest musical memory? Performing ‘I’m a Barbie girl’ with a Barbie as my microphone – those were the days of five year old me – and all of it caught on film!
07. Who have been your musical influences? Angus & Julia Stone, Lana Del Rey, Banks, Ben Howard, Fleetwood Mac, Matt Corby… and the list goes on!
08. What are your favourite songs of all time? ‘Keep Your Head Up’ – Ben Howard, ‘Goddess’ – Banks, ‘Fast Car’ – Tracy Chapman, ‘Heart Full Of Wine’ – Angus & Julia Stone and many many more!
09. Where’s your favourite place to listen to music? In my backyard, laying in the sunshine. Second to that would definitely be in my car with the volume max!
10. Who are your go-to artists when you’re feeling :
Happy? Ben Howard/Mumford & Sons.
Sad? Lana Del Rey – soo much emotion.
Exhausted? Angus & Julia Stone – really good to wind down to.
Introspective? Banks.
11. What was the first album you ever bought? Angus & Julia Stone – ‘Down The Way’.
12. Give us a little fun fact about yourself that people might not know. I’ve been doing kick boxing for seven years!
13. What would your chosen career be if music wasn’t an option? Fitness – I’m a fitness addict!
14. What’s the best advice you’ve been given in your career? Don’t give up – simple yet so true.
15. If you could trade places with any artist in the world right now, who would it be? Is Beyonce a fair enough trade? Who wouldn’t want to be on stage at Coachella performing with Destiny’s Child!!
16. Tell us about your latest release. ‘Better Place’ is my latest release. It was produced by Mark Zito (Fractures) who did an amazing job with the production! The song is about two people becoming distant and not expressing how they feel anymore so now they are searching for a way to save the relationship – anything to get back to that ‘Better Place’.
17. What do your future plans involve? Lots of live shows! I would love to do a tour in the near future and hopefully get an album out in a years time.
18. Where can our audience catch you live? The single launch woohoo!! At Ontop Bar in Melbourne on May 05. Tickets are available online at www.kezramusic.com.
