Welcome to edition #478 of ARIA Chart Watch.
And it’s a big one for the boys from 5 Seconds Of Summer this week, who are shining brightly not only on the ARIA singles chart, but also over on the ARIA albums chart too.
SINGLES
It’s five weeks on the fly for the 5SOS boys on the ARIA singles chart; their single ‘Youngblood’ continues to dominate every other track on the countdown, though Maroon 5 and Cardi B edge a little higher with their single ‘Girls Like You’ (No.3 to No.2).
Anne-Marie is also on the charge with ‘2002’, which is now top five here in Australia (No.8 to No.4).
After the sudden death of XXXTentation during the week, his single ‘Sad!’ rockets into the ARIA top ten, improving a huge 50 positions. Its No.8 position just eclipses its previous peak of No.9.
There’s another improvement for Clean Bandit and Demi Lovato’s ‘Solo’ (No.17 to No.12) and a six place jump for Juice WRLD’s ‘Lucid Dreams’ (No.20 to No.14).
Still in the teens, Nicki Minaj scores the highest debut of the week with her new single ‘Bed’ featuring Ariana Grande. That pops into the countdown at No.17.
And Peking Duk’s ‘Reprisal’ is now really starting to hit its strides, bulleting another 15 positions to now be top 20 (No.35 to No.20).
Childish Gambino’s ‘This Is America’ is the first of the certifications for the week. It’s now platinum certified for sales in excess of 70,000 units, but takes a ten spot tumble to No.22.
That No.22 position is just ahead of the No.23 debut for Martin Garrix’s ‘Ocean’.
Noah Kahan’s ‘Hurt Somebody’ was on the up last week as a result of a promotional visit. That promotional visit now over, the song is down again (No.14 to No.25).
There’s a No.33 debut for Kygo & Imagine Dragons’ collaboration ‘Born To Be Yours’. And there’s a re-entry for XXXTentation’s ‘Changes’ right behind it.
NOTD is up eight from last week’s No.44 debut with ‘I Wanna Know’ (No.36 for the slow ones) and, also thanks to a promotional visit – and performance on ‘The Voice’ – Calum Scott’s ‘You Are The Reason’ soars almost 50 places from No.83 to No.37. That’s still ten spots shy of the track’s peak in Australia thus far.
Troye Sivan and Ariana Grande’s new track ‘Dance To This’ enters at No.39.
The story continues to build for Conrad Sewell’s track ‘Healing Hands’. Though it’s up an impressive 13 places to No.41 this week, there’s no bullet for it. It debuted at No.54 last week.
Tiesto’s ‘Jackie Chan’ is really on the ride, however. It’s up 30 places to No.44.
But Shawn Mendes’ ‘Youth’ fades (No.29 to No.45).
Calum Scott’s cover of ‘Dancing On My Own’ also re-enters the top 100 countdown after the appearance on ‘The Voice’, back just inside the top 50 (No.49).
Jess Glynne’s ‘I’ll Be There’ drops six (No.48 to No.54), Vance Joy’s ‘Saturday Sun’ drops nine No.47 to No.56) and Robinson’s ‘Nothing To Regret’ eases 16 (No.41 to No.57).
A little further down, we have a No.61 debut for Blackpink’s ‘Square Up’ EP, a massive 30 place fall for Kanye West’s ‘Yikes’ (No.33 to No.63) and re-entries for Shawn Mendes’ ‘Nervous’ and Jonas Blue’s ‘Rise’ in positions 65 and 66; the latter a new chart peak in Australia.
Kanye’s ‘Yikes’ isn’t the only one of his tracks tumbling this week. Take a look at the massive 39 place drop for ‘Ghost Town’ (No.30 to No.69).
‘The Voice’ winner Sam Perry has a little while to go to achieve worldwide fame and glory, though his single ‘Trust Myself’ (which debuts at No.78) only benefits from four days of sales (Monday to Thursday).
The bad news continues for Kanye; Kids See Ghosts’ ‘4th Dimension’ tumbling from No.46 on debut to No.81.
There are debuts in positions 86 and 87 for Ruel’s ‘Younger’ and Alessia Cara’s ‘Growing Pains’ respectively, plus a No.92 debut for 5 Seconds Of Summer’s ‘Valentine’ as the album begins to make its impact.
Troye Sivan’s ‘Bloom’ withers, however, losing 32 positions to No.94.
ALBUMS
Despite that surprise new release from The Carters (Beyoncé and Jay Z), they come nowhere near to knocking the No.1 dreams of our 5SOS boys out of the pocket.
5 Seconds Of Summer claim the No.1 position on debut with ‘Youngblood’, giving them No.1 on the singles and albums chart simultaneously.
The rest of the top five is made up of ‘The Greatest Showman’ soundtrack, Post Malone’s ‘Beerbongs & Bentleys’, Ed Sheeran’s ‘÷’ and a bulleting ‘?’ from XXXTentation after his sudden death during the week.
The Carters come in just on the back end of the top five; ‘Everything Is Love’ claiming No.6 on debut.
Calum Scott’s ‘Only Human’ re-entering after his promotional visit at No.7 (that’s just two spots shy of the album’s No.5 peak.
The top ten action continues with a decent No.9 debut for the new Christina Aguilera album ‘Liberation’.
Just missing out on top ten berths this week are Jess & Matt (‘Songs From The Village’ at No.11) and Mike Shinoda (‘Post Traumatic’ at No.12).
Not great news for Brisbane band Sheppard, however, who lose 20 positions in second week sales of their new album ‘Watching The Sky’ (No.1 to No.21).
Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever premiere at No.24 with ‘Hope Downs’, but The Presets stumble slightly with their ‘Hi Viz’ (No.9 to No.28).
The tour announcement has done wonders for sales of the Bon Jovi album ‘This House Is Not For Sale’, which re-enters the top 100 at No.34.
It’s marginally better performing than new albums from Cosmo’s Midnight (‘What Comes Next’) and Jay Rock (‘Redemption’), which enter the countdown on debut in positions 36 and 37 respectively.
Taylor Swift’s ‘1989’ is down 15 (No.23 to No.38).
A debut at No.46 for the new Buddy Guy album ‘The Blues Is Alive And Well’ wraps the top 50 debuts this week.
The huge 39 place second week drop for Lily Allen’s ‘No Shame’ is the lowlight in the 40s (No.8 on debut to No.47).
The dreaded second week fall isn’t just confined to Lily, however. Olivia Newton-John’s ‘Hopelessly Devoted : The Hits’ is down from No.14 on debut to No.52 and Jorja Smith’s ‘Lost & Found’ is down from No.13 on debut to No.53.
Arctic Monkeys’ ‘Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino’ loses 24 spots to No.58 and the Shawn Mendes album ‘Illuminate’ is down 16 to No.59.
This week’s No.62 spot is occupied by State Champs’ new album ‘Living Proof’ on debut.
Hillsong Worship’s ‘There Is More’ sells less (No.31 to No.67), as does A$AP Rocky’s ‘Testing’ (No.44 to No.68).
There’s a No.72 debut for Kristy James’ ‘Raw’, a No.76 debut for Ruel’s ‘Ready’ and a No.83 debut for Johnny Marr’s ‘Call The Comet’.
Mayday Parade wrap the week’s top 100 debuts with ‘Sunnyland’ in position 91.
