Welcome to edition #510 of ARIA Chart Watch, our weekly wrap of the ARIA top 100s.
And this week, there’s change atop one of the countdowns. Plus plenty of movement elsewhere.
So scratch the surface and delve right in;
SINGLES
Ariana Grande proves that last week’s debut at No.1 for her new single ‘7 Rings’ was no fluke. She’s there for a second successive week, once again holding off Post Malone and Swae Lee’s ‘Sunflower’ and Ava Max’s ‘Sweet But Psycho’ (steady at Nos.2 and 3 respectively).
The news is good for Travis Scott and Drake this week too. Hot on the heels of its No.3 placing in Triple J’s Hottest 100 countdown, their track ‘Sicko Mode’ bullets from No.12 to No.6, just eclipsing its previous best of No.7.
Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper didn’t need an appearance on the Hottest 100 to climb again with ‘Shallow’ (No.11 to No.8), but the No.1 single on the Hottest 100 (Ocean Alley’s ‘Confidence’, which debuted at No.93 last week) rockets from No.93 to No.9.
Singles from Ariana, George Ezra and Benny Blanco exit the top ten, but Dean Lewis gains two places to a new peak of No.14 with his latest single ‘7 Minutes’.
J Cole score the highest debut of the week. He’s in at No.15 with ‘Middle Child’.
The news gets even better for Dean Lewis this week. His previous No.1 smash ‘Be Alright’ also gains not only three places, but also a new fifth platinum accreditation, meaning it’s now sold more than 350,000 units.
Billie Eilish’s ‘When The Party’s Over’ is up from No.31 to No.23 (it was No.8 on the Hottest 100).
The week’s second new certification comes courtesy of the Calvin Harris/Sam Smith single ‘Promises’. It might be down five places to No.31, but it’s done enough in its 24 week chart run to achieve a triple platinum gong (210,000 unit sales).
Dominic Fike continues his ascendancy with ‘3 Nights’ (No.38 to No.32) and Fisher premieres at No.35 with their single ‘Losing It’. It was No.2 on Triple J’s countdown last weekend and premieres on the official 100 at No.35 armed with a gold sales accreditation (35,000 sales).
Gesaffelstein loses ground with ‘Lost In The Fire’ (down from No.24 to No.36), but thanks to its appearance on the Hottest 100 (at No.17), Billie Eilish’s ‘Lovely’ is up from No.53 to No.43.
Love for Lauv; his new single ‘I’m So Tired’ (with our own Troye Sivan) premieres at No.47.
It’s just ahead of a No.76 to No.48 jump for Amy Shark’s ‘I Said Hi’, which placed at No.5 on the Triple J countdown.
Mallrat’s ‘Groceries’, which was No.7 on the Hottest 100, premieres at No.57 on the official ARIA countdown and does so also armed with a new gold accreditation.
Kehlani’s ‘Nights Like This’ is up from a No.73 debut to No.59 and A$AP Rocky’s ‘Praise The Lord (Da Shine)’ bullets from No.88 to No.61 (again thanks to Triple J).
Though Ariana Grande continues to shine atop the ARIA countdown, her previous track ‘Imagine’ loses its lustre, dropping 18 places to No.67.
There’s a No.70 re-entry for Hayden James and Boy Matthews’ ‘Just Friends’ and a No.72 debut for Dua Lipa’s ‘Swan Song’.
Childish Gambino’s former No.1 hit ‘This Is America’ is back (No.77 on re-entry thanks to a No.4 placing on the Hottest 100).
Drake’s ‘Nice For What’ is up 18 to No.80, Mustard’s ‘Pure Water’ trickles from No.99 on debut to No.84, but P!nk’s ‘A Million Dreams’ slides 16 to No.85.
Vera Blue’s into the countdown with ‘All The Pretty Girls’ (No.89 on debut). So too are Ocean Alley with ‘Baby Come Back’ (No.91). Both songs featured in the Hottest 100.
Amazingly, Toto’s ’80s classic ‘Africa’ is still in the top 100 (albeit down nine to No.98). But 38 long years after its release, the song bags its sixth platinum accreditation, soaring through 420,000 unit sales in Australia.
ALBUMS
Right, well obviously it’s here on the albums chart where the change is up the very top.
After remaining unmoved in the No.1 position for weeks, the soundtrack to ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ finally gives way this week… to ‘Amo’, the new album from Bring Me The Horizon.
‘Amo’ becomes the band’s fourth successive No.1 album down under, a run dating back to their 2010 long player ‘There Is A Hell, Believe Me I’ve Seen It. There Is A Heaven, Let’s Keep It A Secret’.
Proving that they still have a lot of fans down under, the Backstreet Boys premiere at a very respectable No.5 with their new album ‘DNA’.
That’s their best chart position down under since their 2000 album ‘Black & Blue’ (No.2), which came just a smidge after the height of their fame.
Keith Urban tour… Keith Urban album flying. His long player ‘Graffiti U’ bulleting from No.20 to No.8.
Ocean Alley’s gold-certified ‘Chiaroscuro’ is back in the top 100 – at No.11 – thanks mainly to their performance on Triple J’s Hottest 100 countdown. The band had four tracks on said countdown, including the No.1, No.10 and No.100 songs.
Also on the rise this week are ‘All For You : The Best Of Cold Chisel’ (No.40 to No.17) and George Ezra’s ‘Staying At Tamara’s’ (No.27 to No.18).
Worship group Bethel Music’s ‘Victory (Live)’ enters the Aussie chart at No.23, ahead of an 11 place jump for ‘The Very Best Of INXS’ (No.35 to No.24).
Mirusia’s ‘A Salute To The Seekers’ is new at No.27, Luke Combs goes gold (35,000 sales) with ‘This One’s For You’ at No.28, while the chaps from Rüfüs Du Sol see their ‘Solace’ back in the ARIA top 50 after it jumps from No.51 to No.29.
Also back in the top 50 is AC/DC’s ‘Live’ (No.55 to No.33), while ‘Songs From The South Vol.1 & 2’ from Paul Kelly is back in the top 100 at No.36.
Rudimental postponed their upcoming Australian tour throughout the week. Fast forward to the weekend and their album ‘Toast To Our Differences’ enters the Aussie countdown at No.41.
Two places lower, Julia Michaels scores a debut for her new LP ‘Inner Monologue Part 1’ (No.43).
The news isn’t too crash hot for Maggie Rogers, however. After debuting at a very healthy No.8 with her debut album ‘Heard It In A Past Life’ last weekend, that album’s down to No.44 in week two.
A repackage of Weezer’s self-titled ‘Teal Album’ is new at No.49, just ahead of a top 100 re-entry for the Why Don’t We EP ‘8 Letters’ (No.50).
Outside the top 50 this week, the soundtrack to ‘Molly’ is up (No.86 to No.52), Fidlar’s ‘Almost Free’ is new (No.57), but after her Australian tour, Florence & The Machine’s ‘High As Hope’ is down 24 (to No.65).
Further down still, there’s a massive 40 place slump for the Bruno Mars album ’24K Magic’ (No.47 to No.87), while Fleetwood Mac’s classic ‘Rumours’ is down 21 to No.90.
Lorde’s ‘Melodrama’ is down further, however. It was flying high in the top 50 last week at No.43. Seven days on it’s a massive 51 places lower at No.94.
There are a few big drops from the top 50 out of the top 100 this week too, however.
Dodie’s ‘Human’ drops more than 50 places and is gone from the top 100 (No.50).
Papa Roach’s ‘Who Do You Trust’ drops more than 58 places and is also gone from the top 100 (No.42).
Future’s ‘Future Hndrxx Presents : The Wizrd’ drops more than 67 places and is also gone from the top 100 (No.33).
James Blake’s ‘Assume Form’ was at No.22 last week. It’s dropped more than 78 places and is gone from the top 100.
Missy Higgins’ ‘The Sound Of White’ was back in the top 100 at No.18 last week after being released in vinyl. It’s also gone from the top 100 seven days on after slumping more than 82 places.
But spare a thought for Cup Sport. Their self-titled third album premiered at a very respectable No.12 on last week’s chart. One week on and it’s also gone from the top 100, having lost in excess of 88 positions.
