Ariana Grande continues to dominate in this week’s ARIA Chart Watch, holding at No.1 on both singles and albums charts. She also scores accreditation updates on both!
But there are more accreditation tweaks elsewhere too, so let’s crack on and discover who’s earned what.
SINGLES
Starting right at the very beginning and Ariana Grande continues to hold not only in the No.1 spot with her smash hit ‘7 Rings’, but also at No.2 with her album track ‘Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored’.
But it’s the former hitting its certification strides this week, achieving platinum status for sales in excess of 70,000 copies. Last week it had none.
The new accreditations continue at No.3, with Post Malone and Swae Lee’s single ‘Sunflower’ shining brighter with a new triple platinum award (210,000 units sold).
‘Sunflower’ isn’t the only Post Malone single copping an accreditation tweak this week. ‘Wow’ is up one spot to an equal peak of No.4 and goes platinum.
It improves at the expense of Billie Eilish’s ‘Bury A Friend’, though it achieves a gold certification (35,000 copies).
And they keep coming; Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s ‘Shallow’ (from the ‘A Star Is Born’ soundtrack) is now triple platinum (steady at No.6).
There’s a very decent jump for the Khalid single ‘Talk’. It’s up from last week’s No.24 debut to No.9.
Just behind him, Halsey’s ‘Without Me’ celebrates its 20th week of ARIA chart action by hitting four times platinum (280,000 units).
Dean Lewis’s newbie ‘7 Minutes’ dropped back a few places last week due to the frenzy surrounding the new Ariana Grande album, but it’s back up again this week. Just two positions, however (No.17 to No.15), and now one shy of its No.14 peak.
Good news for The Chainsmokers as they hit Aussie shores for their appearance at the Ultra Music Festival in Sydney and Melbourne. Their new track ‘Who Do You Love’ with 5 Seconds Of Summer bullets from a No.28 debut to No.18.
Dominic Fike’s ‘3 Nights’ also continues its ascendancy. Another ten positions higher this week and now top 20 (No.30 to No.20).
George Ezra’s ‘Shotgun’ is now six times platinum (420,000 units) at No.21. It’s right ahead of the week’s highest debut; Cardi B and Bruno Mars’s ‘Please Me’ at No.22.
A new peak for the Calvin Harris/Rag ‘N’ Bone Man single ‘Giant’ after this week’s performance at the Brit Awards (No.33 to No.24). A new peak also for the Lauv/Troye Sivan single ‘I’m So Tired…’, which rockets 20 places to No.25.
Imagine Dragons’ ‘Bad Liar’ is now platinum (No.26), J Cole’s ‘Middle Child’ is back in the ascendancy (No.35 to No.27) and there’s a new triple platinum accreditation for Khalid’s ‘Better’ at No.28.
Yungblud, Halsey and Travis Barker score a top 30 debut – at No.30 – for their single ’11 Minutes’. But the second week news is less than impressive for Ariana Grande’s ‘Bloodline’, which slumps 20 places from last week’s No.11 debut.
The Ellie Goulding collaboration with Diplo and Swae Lee (‘Close To Me’) improves its chart fortunes this week, picking up six places to No.36. It also picks up a shiny new platinum accreditation after 15 weeks on the Aussie countdown.
Ariana Grande’s ‘Needy’ slumps 25 to No.38 in week two. ‘NASA’ is down 24 to No.40, ‘Imagine’ down 16 to No.41 and ‘Bad Idea’ down 21 to No.42. ‘Imagine’, however, does achieve a gold sales certification.
In the middle of them all is a No.39 debut for the new Zedd project ‘365’ with Katy Perry.
Queen soar back into the top 50 with their iconic smash ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’. It’s up 27 places to No.46.
Kehlani and Ty Dolla $ign’s ‘Nights Like This’ also pops its head back into this week’s top 50, improving just the one place to No.50, swapping places with Dynoro’s ‘In My Mind’ (No.50 to No.51).
21 Savage’s ‘A Lot’ is up five to another new peak of No.52, but Ariana Grande’s ‘Fake Smile’ has been wiped off the top 50. It’s down 32 from last week’s No.22 debut.
George Ezra will be pleased that as his ‘Shotgun’ finally runs out of chart ammunition, his new single ‘Hold My Girl’ is beginning to fire. It premiered last week at a lowly No.99. But it’s done very well for itself in week two, bulleting 44 places to No.55.
Lady Gaga hits platinum with ‘Always Remember Us This Way’ (No.56), ditto Khalid’s ‘Saturday Night’ (No.62).
We’ve got a No.74 to No.65 jump for Mustard & Migos’s ‘Pure Water’ (a new peak) and a debut at No.66 for ‘Robbery’ by Juice WRLD.
Dan + Shay’s ‘Tequila’ takes a shot at the upper reaches of the countdown, jumping ten to a new peak of No.69.
But Dua Lipa’s ‘Swan Song’ is far from bowing out, bulleting from No.94 to No.71, still three places shy of its peak thus far.
The news isn’t grand for Ariana’s ‘In My Head’, which plunges 37 places from last week’s No.36 debut.
Julia Michaels and Selena Gomez’ ‘Anxiety’ dips ten from last week’s No.67 debut and there’s a 20 spot drop for NOTD’s ‘So Close’ (No.61 to No.81).
And Ariana Grande’s ‘Make Up’ plummets from No.41 to No.89.
ALBUMS
To the albums side of things and ‘7 Rings’ isn’t the only Ariana Grande release scoring a new certification this week. The album it comes from, ‘Thank U, Next’, also picks up a shiny new gong. It’s now gold, meaning it’s shifted in excess of 35,000 units in Australia in just two weeks. Outstanding.
The new album from Australia’s own The Cat Empire scores the week’s highest album chart debut. ‘Stolen Diamonds’ pinches the No.4 position on debut behind Ari and the soundtracks for ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ and ‘A Star Is Born’.
Queen’s ‘Greatest Hits’ and ‘The Platinum Collection’ follow in positions five and six, followed closely by a No.7 debut for the Florida Georgia Line album ‘Can’t Say I Ain’t Country’.
There’s still plenty of love for Avril Lavigne down under too, if the No.9 debut for her long-awaited new record ‘Head Above Water’ is any indication. Not bad considering her last long player dropped six years ago.
Methyl Ethel just miss the top ten on debut with their latest, ‘Triage’ (No.11).
As mentioned above, George Ezra’s previous megahit ‘Shotgun’ is just now starting to drop, but his new single ‘Hold My Girl’ is starting to hit its straps. All of that action has resulted in a new gold accreditation for the album both tracks are plucked from, ‘Staying At Tamara’s’ (steady at No.18).
The Sticky Fingers record ‘Yours To Keep’, which debuted at No.4 on last weekend’s countdown, is down 16 places to No.20.
And though Ariana Grande’s previous album ‘Sweetener’ also falters this week (losing 11 places to No.25), it picks up its first certification – and a platinum one at that!
Queen’s ‘Greatest Hits II’ is up from No.40 to No.27, Red Hot Chili Peppers’ ‘Greatest Hits’ is up from No.50 to No.29, but Bring Me The Horizon’s ‘AMO’ slides again, down another 14 places to No.31.
Swedish outfit Millencolin’s latest record ‘SOS’ becomes their lowest charting album since their 1997 record ‘For Monkeys’, premiering at No.32. It’s just two spots higher than a seriously low No.34 debut for a Drake project (albeit his 2009 EP ‘So Far Gone’).
Rita Ora’s ‘Phoenix’ slides from No.29 to No.43, Dear Seattle’s ‘Don’t Let Go’ is new at No.45 and Shawn Mendes’ self-titled piece is down 15 to No.47.
Beyond the top 50, there are big drops for Jess Glynne’s ‘Always In Between’ (down 22 to No.57) and Keith Urban’s ‘Graffiti U’ (down 34 to No.58), but a No.92 to No.59 jump for ‘The Eminem Show’ and a No.60 debut for Kiss’s ‘Kissworld : The Best Of Kiss’.
Further down still, Imagine Dragons lose 20 places with ‘Evolve’ (No.61 to No.81) and Ariana Grande’s ‘My Everything’ also loses 20 (No.65 to No.85).
‘The Very Best Of Fleetwood Mac’ is down also (No.64 to No.90), as is the band’s ‘Greatest Hits’ (No.75 to No.93).
A larger than life drop for the Backstreet Boys’ new album ‘DNA’, however. Last week it was shining brightly in position 38, but this week it’s gone from the top 100 entirely.
