Welcome to ARIA Chart Watch, edition #523.
This week, there’s a No.1 debut on one of the charts. But who does it belong to? Is it Taylor Swift, debuting at No.1 on the singles chart with her new smash ‘Me!’?
Or is it perennial chart stormer P!nk premiering at No.1 on the albums chart with her latest long player ‘Hurts 2B Human’?
Read on… find out!
SINGLES
Well despite a week at No.1 on the iTunes chart and time in the No.1 spot on the Spotify chart, Taylor Swift hasn’t quite done enough to knock Lil Nas X from his journey down the ‘Old Town Road’.
That track not only maintains its No.1 heading for a third week, but does so with a fresh new platinum accreditation, meaning it’s sold in excess of 70,000 units in its six week chart run. Not bad going at all.
Its refusal to budge, of course, means that Taylor Swift has been left to pick up the pieces, premiering at No.2 with her latest smash ‘Me!’ (featuring Brendon Urie).
Billie Eilish’s ‘Bad Guy’ and Dominic Fike’s ‘3 Nights’ slip one place each (to Nos.3 and 4) as a result; the latter picking up a new double platinum accreditation (140,000 sales).
Khalid’s ‘Talk’ maintains position five, Post Malone and Swae Lee’s ‘Sunflower’ is steady at six (albeit with a fresh new fifth platinum accreditation – 350,000 sales, tweaked from triple platinum seven days ago).
Also steady, but undergoing a big tweak in certification this week, is the Post Malone track ‘Wow’. It’s up from platinum last Saturday to triple platinum (210,000 copies) this week.
P!nk’s latest single ‘Walk Me Home’ starts to hit its strides as her new album premieres over on the albums chart. It’s up from No.20 to No.13, but is still two places shy of its No.11 peak thus far.
Lil Dicky is on the way up… and how. After debuting at No.46 last week with his single ‘Earth’, he’s up to No.17 in week two.
Even Birds Of Tokyo are on the up with their latest ‘Good Lord’. It rises another six places to a new peak of No.19.
But the news isn’t quite so bright for the Sam Smith/Normani single ‘Dancing With A Stranger’, which slides nine positions to No.21. Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s ‘Shallow’ is also down (from No.15 to No.23) and the new BTS track ‘Boy With Luv’ dips from No.16 to No.25.
The new SZA, The Weeknd and Travi$ Scott single ‘Power Is Power’, however, muscles its way into the top 50 in its second week of ARIA chart love. From a debut of No.54 last week, it’s jumped 24 places to No.30.
Khalid’s ‘Better’ is now four times platinum (280,000 copies) at No.31 and Amy Shark goes gold with ‘Mess Her Up’ in the No.40 spot (a new peak).
There’s a decent dozen drop for George Ezra’s former No.1 single ‘Shotgun’ (No.35 to No.47). It’s right ahead of a debut at No.48 for the title track from the new P!nk album ‘Hurts 2B Human’.
Bazzi’s ‘Paradise’ finally cracks the top 50, but only just… it rises from No.56 to another new peak of No.50.
The Travis Scott/Drake single ‘Sicko Mode’ vacates the top 50 this week, but bids farewell with a new fifth platinum certification (No.42 to No.51).
Blackpink’s ‘Kill This Love’ also loses its grip on a top 50 berth, also dropping nine from No.43 to No.52.
But the Kygo/Rita Ora single ‘Carry On’ is on the up. It’s an impressive 26 places higher than its No.79 debut last weekend.
Post Malone’s ‘Better Now’ is five times platinum now. And 11 places higher now (to No.54).
But Khalid’s ‘My Bad’ is all the way down from No.39 to No.55.
A debut at No.59 for Stormzy’s ‘Vossi Bop’ is followed by a No.60 debut for the Marshmello track ‘Light It Up’ (with Tyga and Chris Brown).
Imagine Dragons’ ‘Bad Liar’ slumps 15 to No.64.
Ed Sheeran’s chart run continues beyond the walls of the ARIA top 50. His former No.1 smash ‘Perfect’ is still swanning around the lower half of the hundred and is still selling. In its 113th week on the Australian top 100, ‘Perfect’ notches up an impressive 11th platinum accreditation, meaning it’s sold in excess of 770,000 units.
Also swanning around the lower half of the top 100 for a number of weeks (17 to be precise), Alec Benjamin’s single ‘Let Me Down Slowly’ is now platinum certified (down nine to No.70). Meek Mill and Drake’s ‘Going Bad’ is also platinum (No.71).
Lizzo premieres at No.74 with ‘Truth Hurts’, Mark Ronson and Miley Cyrus are down from No.62 to No.76 with ‘Nothing Breaks Like A Heart’, but Post Malone’s ‘Psycho’ jumps from No.96 to No.81.
Not great news for the Queen classic ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’. The inimitable number slumps 30 places and is down to No.83.
Just like the aforementioned ‘Perfect’, Ed Sheeran’s fellow former No.1 smash ‘Shape Of You’ is also still in the ARIA top 100. It’s been in for a huge 121 weeks and it also achieves a new certification this week; 14 times platinum. That’s a mammoth 980,000 units sold. Roll on the million.
ScHoolboy Q premieres at No.89 with ‘Floating’, but Jonas Brothers’ new single ‘Cool’ dips 19 to No.90. Ellie Goulding’s ‘Sixteen’ is down 15 from last week’s No.77 debut.
Lukas Graham’s ‘Love Someone’ makes the band no one hit wonder, given its fresh new double platinum accreditation at No.93.
ALBUMS
Yes, it’s on the albums chart where there’s a new number one.
It is, of course, the new P!nk album ‘Hurts 2B Human’.
It’s P!nk’s fifth consecutive No.1 studio album down under, a stretch that dates back to her 2006 long player ‘I’m Not Dead’ (lead single ‘Stupid Girls’). It also follows on from the No.1 of her previous album, 2017’s ‘Beautiful Trauma’.
Billie Eilish doesn’t go too far with ‘When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?’ (No.2).
But there are four other debuts in this week’s top ten, giving the chart a long-awaited shake-up.
Second best in the debut stakes is Rob Thomas and his long player ‘Chip Tooth Smile’, which premieres at No.3.
No.4 is also a new entry… King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard’s ‘Fishing For Fishies’.
There’s a debut at No.6 for the new Hillsong United album ‘People’ and another at No.9 for the Catfish & The Bottlemen album ‘The Balance’.
BTS drop from No.3 to No.10 with ‘Map Of The Soul : Persona’, having debuted at No.1 two weeks back.
Just missing the top ten on debut this week is the ScHoolboy Q album ‘Crash Talk’ (No.11).
The new certifications aren’t just confined to the singles chart this week; Post Malone’s album ‘Beerbongs & Bentleys’ scores a new double platinum accreditation, meaning it’s sold in excess of 140,000 copies.
And with the ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ soundtrack dropping from No.6 to No.14, there’s no sign of Queen in the Aussie top ten for the first time in a long time.
Post Malone’s ‘Stoney’ is on the up (No.36 to No.21), while the new Marina album ‘Love + Fear’ makes its entry down under at No.22. The Cranberries’ ‘In The End’ enters at No.28.
As mentioned, no Queen in the top ten this week. ‘Greatest Hits’ is out. And how. It plunges a huge 27 places to No.31 this weekend.
Beyoncé’s ‘Homecoming : The Live Album’ also tumbles, down from No.18 on debut to No.32.
Aussie swing king David Campbell is ‘Back In The Swing’, with a new entry at No.33. It’s followed closely behind by a No.46 to No.34 jump for the Taylor Swift album ‘1989’.
Khalid’s ‘American Teen’ album hits platinum (70,000 units) at No.35, while Human Nature’s Australian visit results in a No.37 re-entry for their latest album ‘Romance Of The Jukebox’.
‘The Very Best Of INXS’ tumbles from No.25 to No.46, but it’s Queen’s ‘The Platinum Collection’ which dips further (much further), plunging 42 places to No.50.
Just beyond the top 50, debuts for Aldous Harding’s ‘Designer’ (No.53) and Ceres’ ‘We Are A Team’ (No.55). There’s another for Paul Kelly’s ‘Live At Sydney Opera House’ (No.61) and another for the Eurovision compilation (No.63).
Despite a No.1 debut for her new album, the P!nk best-of (‘Greatest Hits… So Far’) loses a huge 38 places to No.67.
JJ Cale’s in at No.69 with ‘Stay Around’, Hozier’s ‘Wasteland, Baby!’ is down 18 to No.73 and the Tom Walker album ‘What A Time To Be Alive’ plummets 48 places to No.82.
Further still, there’s an 18 place drop for the LSD album (No.67 to No.85), a No.87 debut for Kevin Abstract’s ‘Arizona Baby’ and a mammoth 53 place second week slump for the Lizzo album ‘Cuz I Love You’.
The Ten Tenors’ album ‘Love Is In The Air’ debuted at No.27 last weekend. It’s now gone from the top 100 altogether. Roll on Mother’s Day!
